About Maribeth

Classically trained with a Music Degree from Sarah Lawrence College, I have created a student centered approach-I teach the way you learn best! I have taught students age 6 to 92, from professionals with albums who have appeared on television and Broadway, to rank beginners of all ages. I also teach special needs students, and students with a range of physical limitations. I have a background in the Alexander Technique, and as a vocalist I have performed at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, at New York City's St. Patrick's Cathedral for special services (including the Irish Famine Remembrance). I have been in a number of cover and original bands, performed standards with a women's trio, and write and perform my own music. Currently, I teach students of a variety of backgrounds all over the US, and in Europe.

I believe the voice is centered in the body, and in general, problems come from one of three areas:

-Stage Fright / Anxiety

-Body Tension

-Breathing Issues

I started to teach when I was in my twenties, when I was really having issues with my voice, and basically had to start over from scratch! I was performing so much, I was in danger of permanent damage, and found a number of approaches and techniques that worked for me, and I translated them ot others. I LOVE hearing when students find their voices, and that "aha!" moment in their eyes when things work...particularly in someone who has been told they can't sing!

I have a BA in Fine Arts with a focus on music from Sarah Lawrence College, have done post grad studies in Vocal Performance at NYU, and am certified K-12 Music by the state of Florida.

About the lesson

My typical process for working with a new student would be chatting with them about their music goals, any physical limitations, and any negative experiences they may have had in their past with regard to singing...not unlike a form of therapy (which it is!)

I have students who have been singing all their lives and have stumbled with change, those who are young and focused and want to perform, those who have wanted to prepare for all state or competition or auditions, and those who just want to have better voices.

No matter how good a teacher is, sometimes that initial "click" makes all the difference. If they are willing to go with you on something that's not working, to try a new way? Great sign! I've been to highly recommended teachers who did not treat me with respect, and I don't think you can learn from someone you don't like.

That said, a teacher who meets your needs now may not necessarily meet them later. And a good teacher will not only accept this, but can help you move forward!

One of my students performed in "The Sound of Music Live!" with Carrie Underwood; that would probably be the flashiest event. Ever day I teach and someone learns makes me love the fact that I am a teacher!

Maribeth was so encouraging that I actually stood up and sang a song without having prepared it. She was so good at coaching that I kept coming back, even though my initial thought was “eek, this isn’t what I signed up for !”
