About Bonita

The mezzo-contralto Bonita Hyman, born in Brooklyn NY, and living in Germany since 1995, has performed as a featured soloist on numerous stages in the United States and Europe, among them the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Dallas Opera, the Opera Orchestra of New York, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Opéra Nationale de Lyon, the Opéra Comique de Paris, Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Düsseldorf), Oper Leipzig, Städtische Bühnen Nürnberg, the Bregenzer Festspiele and the National Reisopera in the Netherlands.

Most recently has Hyman been engaged by the Salzburger Festspiele (2020) as the Erste Magd in a new production of the Richard Strauss opera, ELEKTRA, directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski and conducted by Franz Welser-Möst with the Wiener Philharmonic. This production was performed in the Felsenreitschule and broadcast around the world through the streaming services MEZZO and fidelio (where it can still be seen), as well as in Europe on television via ARTE, 3sat and ORF.

She has also been most recently engaged as the Erste Magd in the acclaimed landmark Patrice Chéreau production of ELEKTRA by the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin (2019 and 2016), the Teatro alla Scala in Milan (2018 and 2014), the Metropolitan Opera in New York (2016), the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki (2016), the Teatro al Liceu in Barcelona (2016) and the Festival Aix-en-Provence (2013), as well as in the role of Begonia in Henze’s DER JUNGE LORD at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich (2019) and the Staatsoper Hannover (2017). The Met production of ELEKTRA has also been broadcast around the world as part of its Met HD Live series, as part of the “Great Performances” Series on PBS and is still available online as part of the Met’s streaming service.

Among her other career highlights are several high profile world premieres. She created the role of the extraterrestrial Negerin in world-premiere production of Detlev Glanert's SOLARIS at the Bregenzer Festspiele (Festspielhaus, 2012); created the role of Tiatin in Robert Wilson production of Tania León’s SCOURGE OF HYACINTHS, after the radio play by Nobel Prize Laureate, Wole Soyinka at the Grand Théâter de Genève, with further performances at the Opéra de Nancy, the FestSpielHaus, St. Pölten, and the Palació de Bellas Artes in Mexico City; created the role of Félicité in Michaël Lévinas’ LES NÈGRES, after the Jean Genet play, a co-production of the Nationale Opéra de Lyon and the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Stanislas Nordey directing, Bernhard Kontarsky, conducting (original cast recording on Sisyphe/Abeille Musique); and created the role of Frysian high priestess, Eastra, in Henk Alkema’s BONIFACIUS, with a multilingual libretto and stage direction by Peter te Nuyl in a four-city Dutch tour, commissioned and co-produced by Rixt Foundation and Harmonie Foundation NL, with Noord Nederlands Orchestra, Hans Leenders conducting.

She was the Alto in first complete staging of Vinko Globokar’s L’ARMONIA DRAMMATICA, Bühnen der Stadt Bielefeld, as well as the Mezzo soloist in the premiere of Olly Wilson's "Of Visions and Truth", commissioned by Black Music Repertory Ensemble, first performed at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall in 1990; again at the Harris Theater in Chicago in 2011, and recorded on Albany Records (TROY1200) by Center for Black Music Research, Chicago 08/09, released 07/10.

In addition to her recent concertante performance as Maria in PORGY AND BESS at the Vienna Volksoper (2019) were stage productions with Dallas Opera (02/08), the Opéra Comique in Paris, the International Festival of Music & Dance at the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, Théâter Caen in Normandy (all in 06/08) and at the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg (10/08).

Her extensive repertoire includes the roles of Azucena („IL TROVATORE”), Ulrica („UN BALLO IN MASCHERA“), Erda („DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN”), Suzuki („MADAMA BUTTERFLY”), Bradamante („ALCINA”), Ursula („BÉATRICE ET BÉNÈDICT”), both Baba the Turk and Mother Goose („THE RAKE’S PROGRESS“), and Geneviève („PELLÉAS ET MÉLISANDE”), among others.

As a concert artist, her repertoire crosses the spectrum from Händel („MESSIAH”) to Verdi („REQUIEM”) through to Berio („SINFONIA”), in which she performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall, and she has appeared as a featured soloist with the Houston Symphony, the Philharmonie des Nationen, the Orchestra of Operá Marseille, the Organaciòn Filharmonia of Mexico in Mexico City, and the Chicago Sinfonietta.

Ms. Hyman received her artistic training at Oberlin College - Conservatory of Music (Oberlin, OH, B. Mus. 1974), at Yale University (New Haven, CT, M.Mus. 1981) and in the Opera Studio of the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists in Chicago (1986), as well as at the AIMS Program in Graz, Austria (1988). As a vocal pedagogue, Ms. Hyman served on the faculties of DePaul University (1993-1995) and Sherwood Conservatory of Music (1989-1995), both in Chicago. She is currently a voice teacher at the Municipal Music School in Gießen, where she has served since 2005. She received her training and certification as a Choral Director through the Hessischer Sängerbund e.V. Choral Director School in Marburg, Germany (2011), and is the founder and director of the VHS Chor Kaleidoskop since 2011.

I am a people person, have a great sense of humor and enjoy sharing my extensive experience as a stage and concert performer.

I first began teaching as a graduate student. My professional level teaching began after completing my opera apprenticeship in Chicago, simultaneous with pursuing an international level career. I was teaching at the Sherwood Conservatory of Music starting in 1992 and at DePaul University in 1993. I relocated to Europe for a Fest theater engagement, and resumed teaching in 1998 in Europe together with my career as a freelance soloist.

About the lesson

In the first lesson, we discuss briefly what goals the student wishes to receive. If they already have some experience -- I have worked with many professional and semi professional singers over the years -- I request to hear them sing something representative of their current development. It could be as simple as a folk song or as advanced as a short operatic aria. The idea is to see how they use their voice. I assess the areas in which they need work and we go from there, with the appropriate exercises and the practical application of this technical work to literature.

I have worked with a wide variety of students: middle school age children in choral classes; young singers aged 13 to 18 in both classical and pop; young professionals 18 and older in classical and pop; amateur adults and mature singers as old as 70, usually in classical or standards. I am a choral director, and some of my older students are also members of my choir. I have also done specialized coaching in German repertoire/diction with college students preparing recitals and/or auditions and young professionals preparing performances.

Look for a teacher with extensive experience as both a teacher and as a performer. A good voice teacher is clear in their explanations, has a fine ear and is patient, engaged and kind but also disciplined in their approach to study.

I was very recently engaged as the Erste Magd in a new production of the Richard Strauss opera, "ELEKTRA" at the prestigious Salzburg Music Festival during their 100th Anniversary season. I was very fortunate to be working at a time when, due to the pandemic, most of the summer music festivals had been cancelled. This production was broadcast and live-streamed all over the world.
