About Michael
I started skating when I was five years old, but never skated very well. My interest was renewed as an adult eight years ago, when I started taking classes. With proper instruction and regular practice, I became the skater I am today; good enough to have a couple of impressive moves and to become a Skate IA Level 1 Certified Instructor.
Being an instructor is not just about skating with skill. In my time I have seen some top-notch skaters who try to teach others and fail.
Three years ago, when the Church of 8 Wheels started, and David Miles put out the call for skaters to become certified instructors, I jumped at the opportunity to help "spread rolligion," by helping new skaters get throught that "awkward phase" of learning to skate, and hopefully convert them to being skaters for life!
I have 11 years of adult skating experience, and three years as an instructor certified through SkateIA (Skate Instructors Association). During those three years, I have been teaching group and private lessons at the Church of 8 Wheels skate school in San Francisco, along with private lessons at various other locations in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Without question, the first step is to ask students what they want to learn. Often, the answer is as simple as "I just want to learn to skate," but many times a student does have more specific goals in mind. Knowing his or her goals allows me to craft a unique lesson plan, or it might even signal that I might not be the right teacher, depending on what the student wants to learn.
Virtually all ages and various skill levels. I've taught students as young as four and as old as 50-60. I've worked with beginners who have never been on skates in their lives, but also helped improve the skills of intermediate skaters looking to learn new moves. Everyone I have taught has improved in some way during a lesson.
We had free lessons at the Church of 8 Wheels recently (sorry, we only do that on rare occasion), where I got to teach a beginner lesson to over 25 students (I lost count) in two separate classes. Never before had I taught a class that large. It was great to see that many people in one place wanting to learn how to skate. Interest in skating is growing, but it's hard to do without knowing the basics, so I'm so glad that we get the opportunity to help.

I've always loved watching great roller skaters, and I longed to join them -- but I had no idea how to even begin. Then I met Mike. Mike is a great skater in his own right, demonstrating perfect control over how he gets around on wheels (forwards, backwards, sideways, balancing on one leg, you name it), as well as routinely executing jaw-dropping moves like double-toe spins, side skating, and the "coffin" (both forwards and backwards!).
What makes Mike exceptional is that he is also a gifted teacher. He is friendly, professional, and supportive. With technical precision, he immediately hones in on the minute details of problems that hold me back from reaching the next level of skating. Mike has taught me the fundamentals of skating (both striding and swizzling) and skate theory (body positioning, rotation, edging, and weight transference -- or "BREW"). From him, I've also learned crucial safety skills (wearing protective gear as well as falling and getting up properly), backwards skating, toe-stopping, single-leg balance, and some dance steps.
With Mike's lessons and practicing on my own, I've come a long way in just six months. When I first met Mike, the idea of wheels on the bottoms of my feet was nerve-wracking, and I bragged that somehow, by some miracle, I'd "made it from here to there" (about twenty feet) without falling. He smiled and said, "Well, that's a start." Now I'm skating around at a respectable pace, slalom turning, balancing, squatting into a cannonball and standing up again while rolling, and performing basic line dances.
The most important thing is that I've developed a real passion for skating, and I'm having a lot of fun -- without a lot of falling these days. I'm deeply grateful for Mike and his lessons, and I always look forward to them. I highly recommend Mike's instruction to anyone, of any age and level, who wants to learn how to skate or to improve their existing skills.View more recommendations
