About Emily

Hi there! I am an English Education major at the University of Arkansas, graduating in spring 2022. I can't wait to be able to teach students at the high school level, but for now, I'm focusing on teaching young learners how to read, spell, and work on their vocabulary! Teaching a child to read is a team effort, let's work together!

In high school, I worked in a preschool where I taught preschool-students how to read and write their letters. I also have lots of recent experience volunteering at a local community center with an after-school program for young children where I worked on reading skills with students!

I enjoy helping young learners boost their confidence in the classroom because of their improved skills!

I have always known I wanted to be a teacher. I was the kid who would walk into a classroom and envision my own decoration in the room, read to my stuffed animals, and was always the teacher's pet. In high school, I struggled with school due to undiagnosed ADHD. If it weren't for a few of my teachers who truly believed in me and saw my efforts, I wouldn't be as successful as I am today in my academic career. These teachers changed my life, and I hope to be able to do that for another person someday!

I have worked with preschool-6th grade students with reading and spelling skills. I have also helped students expand their vocabulary by researching age-appropriate words, providing definitions, and contexts in which these words should be used.

The first time I meet a student, I like to spend some time getting to know them. By spending a few minutes asking questions about their day or what they like to do, I can have a better understanding of your child as a person, not just a student. I try to ask what they are currently reading and ask them to read me a few pages. In this time, I take notice of where they struggle and excel. I then use that information to help me decide which areas to focus on.

I have worked with mostly younger students who learn in the general classroom.

Find someone you click with. Trusting someone to teach you or your child is a big deal! I believe it is important to have 3 sessions or so with a specific tutor and then evaluate whether you like the tutor. At the end of the day, a personal connection that you or your child has with someone can be more impactful than someone with accolades and years of experience.

One thing that has happened to me recently that I will always remember with a smile is when I reunited a lost cat with his owner. I was moving houses over the summer when the cutest and friendliest cat wandered into my house. I was immediately attached to his personality. He had no collar, so I took him to the vet to get scanned for a chip. When he didn't have one, I decided to adopt him! I took him to the shelter to make it official and he was mine! I would wake up in the mornings with him sharing my pillow with me, him laying on my chest with his face pressed against mine, or even him taking up the entire bed because he stretched his body out as far as he could. He and I were sitting on the couch one day while I was scrolling through a local Facebook page when I saw a post about a missing cat. When I clicked on the post, pictures of my little guy sitting right next to me popped up-- he had been missing for a month! Right away, I knew I had to give him back. Even though he and I had spent quite a bit of time together and I loved him dearly, I knew that it was the right thing to do. I contacted the number on the post and his owner picked him up within an hour. His owner occasionally sends me funny photos of him which always make me smile!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Teachers should always do their best to help a student in any way they can. However, we all know that it doesn't always happen that way. As someone who struggled in school, I think it's important to speak up sooner rather than later. It is much easier to catch up when you are one lesson behind, rather than 5 lessons behind.
