About Suzy
Hi! I'm Suzy!
In 2006, I began teaching private music lessons out of a small room on the second floor of my childhood home. Over a decade later, I have expanded my studio and gained a reputation for being a kind, thoughtful and intuitive teacher specializing in piano, guitar, uke, bass, songwriting, and theory classes.
Our lessons are fun, engaging, and fulfilling, and many have described feeling energized and inspired after working with me. Having taught hundreds of students of all levels, I have the knowledge and experience to structure lessons based on the needs and interests of each individual I work with. After an initial lesson, I spend lots of time considering the best approach to teaching my pupil, and I map out a game plan to help them meet their goals. I always welcome and encourage feedback and I try to keep an open mind!
Many of my students have gone on to pursue successful careers in music, and others have continued their love of music as a favorite hobby. Whatever the outcome of our lessons, I always cherish the connections I make with fellow music-lovers.
I hope to meet you and find out more about your music journey!
I have learned so much from my students over the years. I think that's what I love the most about teaching. Everyone is different, and I feel energized by the challenge of figuring out the best approach to each lesson.
The other thing I love about teaching is witnessing the progress in each person. I've noticed that everyone has an "aha!" moment. Whether my student is finally grasping the circle of fifths, discovering how much her rhythm has improved, or deciding to purchase a songwriting journal because he realizes that his ideas are pretty great, bearing witness to these small victories is what makes teaching worthwhile.
When I was fifteen years old, my piano teacher asked me if I would mentor a boy she was teaching, sitting by him and helping him practice a few nights a week. This part-time job eventually blossomed into my private teaching practice. I thank my teacher for seeing something in me and giving me that initial opportunity to teach!
I studied music privately for fifteen years (classical piano, voice and theory) before attending Humber College and earning my music degree. I am now in the graduate studies program at York University, writing my thesis on the great concept albums of the twentieth century.
I studied songwriting at NYU for two summers with Phil Galdstone (writer for Vanessa Williams, Brandy, Anne Murray and more), Maia Sharp (writer for Cher,Terri Clark, Bonnie Raitt, Art Garfunke and more) and Barry Eastmond ( Producer for Anita Baker, Brandy, Britney Spears, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Tamia, Chaka Khan and more).
I have also participated in the music theatre composition workshops, Noteworthy and Launchpad, both presented by the Musical Stage Company in Toronto.

I always take my time getting to know each student, setting goals together, and making lesson plans that are catered to the student's needs.
I have worked with students of all levels, from ages 2-100!
That's right!- I once had a 100-year-old guitar student! He would sometimes forget what we'd learned the week before, but he was a great pupil and had lots of questions! He taught me that it's really never too late to learn.
I have worked with hundreds of students at all different levels. My studio is a safe space for everyone. I do not discriminate on the basis of race, national origin, disability, religion, age, gender identity, sex, or sexual orientation.
Look for a teacher that is interested in YOU as a student. Find someone who will go out of their way to find out what you are interested in, what your goals are, and what you find challenging about music.
I was working with a trio who wanted to play covers. When I brought up the idea of songwriting, they were all very resistant, but they agreed to do a songwriting exercise because I asked them to humor me. The experience ended up being so successful that they all bought songwriting journals and brought them to class the next week! They've been writing original music ever since!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What kind of music do you like? Who's your favorite artist? Favorite song?
If you could set one musical goal, what would it be?
What do you find most challenging about music?

Online piano lessons with Suzy have been the highlight of my daughter's week these past few months. It's been amazing to see how much she has learned and how much fun she's had- she always comes away from the calls bouncing!
Suzy orchestrates incredible music-making experiences for young people. Our son is happy every week when 'rock band day' arrives.
"Barb and Suzy didn’t coddle us - despite working with them at such a young and impressionable age, they treated us as if we were professionals and had our own ideas on which we could build together. No matter how many years since I always go back to what I had learned then.
“With unstoppable energy and seemingly endless patience Suzy provides the rarest of things – an opportunity for kids to experience communicating in a group setting through music. They write songs, work on arrangements and play all kinds of instruments. They learn to listen to other instruments while they are playing. They get to be creative with music! Not only do our kids LOVE it, but it is providing a foundation for them to enjoy music throughout their whole lives.”

My private lessons are generally priced at $1 per minute. I have different rates for groups, depending on class size. Please inquire!
I'm open to negotiating prices if students are in financial need. Especially during the pandemic, I understand that many have lost income this year. Please let me know if you'd like to discuss options.
