About Andrew
Gift yourself with the joy of music-making through video in lessons. All-level instruction in classical piano for adults given by a patient, creative concert performer/professor with a PhD (Oberlin, Juilliard, Indiana University) and who has taught at New York University, Indiana University and the University of Wisconsin. Long hour + sessions over the Internet work effectively and feel very much like being in the same space. I can help you reach your goals at the piano! Andrew
As a performer, highlights have been solo orchestral appearances with l'Orchestre Symphonique de Quebec, the Nashville Symphony, the Charlotte Symphony, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, recitals throughout Europe, performing the North American premiere of Michel Legrand's Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra with the composer, being showcased in Chicago at the Cultural Center, playing the inaugural recital of the Friends of Mozart Society, and performing in the world premiere of the Schoenberg/Stein transcription of Mahler's Fourth Symphony with the New Society for Private Musical Performance. I've also been featured on NPR and in recordings for television and film scores.
I'm a concert pianist having done my B.M at Oberlin College Conservatory, my M.M at Juilliard, and my D.M (doctorate) at Indiana University. I've also taught at New York, Indiana, Wisconsin universities.

I want to learn the goals of the perspective student and hear about their individual needs so I can tailor my instruction to their profile.
I worked with music majors when on faculties though I have all levels coming to my own studio. I still find it particularly fun to start beginners, opening up the gates to the musical language and guiding to get effective practice skills in place.
It's important to feel comfortable with an instructor and find the right chemistry for you.

Perfect! Honestly, I'm the person that ignores reviews but this experience definitely changed my mind. I myself am an autodidact. Unfortunately with the piano, I taught myself the wrong way. This amazing musician will strip you of your bad habits, teach you the right way giving you the proper drills necessary to practice, and correctly guide you through lessons in order to become the pianist you always wanted to be. I don't want any other teacher but this guy here, and I know for a fact that with commitment, dedication, and hard work, I will become a guru at this instrument, as I strive to be on the same level he is on, I am very grateful to have him as a teacher!

It is very hard to describe with words the experience I have each time I am studying Piano with Andrew.
I am now playing very technical pieces I have always dreamed to play. My piano playing is structured and is growing each time I have an opportunity to see Andrew. He is a wonderful teacher and a pedagogue that pushes me to the next level, and a brillant passionate human being.
I have been studying piano for a while and only with Andrew I saw consistent progress, I am very grateful to be his student. It has been an honor to study with Andrew, and I continue to be grateful for both his guidance in opening doors which I otherwise would not have known existed on the piano and also for his kindness and ongoing support of, for one, my growth and general well being as a person - but, to be specific to the topic at hand, Andrew has been a shaping force in my efforts to come into my own as a musician and as someone who is, in time, as interested in writing original compositions as in rehearsing and performing the works of those who've come before. He's helped me to see - and know, firsthand - that to interpret and perform an arrangement written by another artist truly well is an immensely creative act and a complete art in and of itself.
Andrew not just introduced but facilitated my gaining the privilege to climb inside more great minds than I can name without returning to that still amassing stack of sheet music growing organically (with only a little help from IMSLP) in those spaces on and immediately surrounding my piano.
In Andrew I found a gem that I was lucky enough to mine out of the interminable sea of "options" and "what-if" possibilities that is everyday living in our City of New York.
That last set of steps I take each week in walking toward his studio, I often hear the piano greet me in the hallway, flooding the short corridor bridging elevator to front doorstep. And I know, well by now, this to be Andrew's unique way of saying hello and welcome back - of inviting me again into his world.
He's a great pianist. Great's not a good (enough) word to describe it (his playing). But as much or more so, Andrew's a great teacher. Is a good person. One I can recommend to you without hesitation, whether you've just today been thinking about signing up for your - or your kid's - first lesson or you've got 20 years tucked behind your belt and you could use a mentor and a partner in preparing for the process of auditioning for grad programs, Andrew's suited to both, as his love of the instrument and dedication to sharing his wealth of experience with it is authentic and lifelong - from baby steps to Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Rach, Liszt, back to Bach again, and on and on and.
I should stop.
But send him a message - start the conversation. It doesn't have to go somewhere but, you know, you never know: it might.
-- Matt S.Andrew is the best piano teacher we’ve ever had. My teenager has not only improved within a year so much that she auditioned successfully for Laguardia High School of Music, Art and Performing Arts, but she also has come to enjoy her instrument and practice more than ever. A lesson with him is very focused and intense, he finds the most interesting pieces for practice to tickle the student’s interest. Andrew is very generous with his time, and his lessons usually extend way beyond an hour because he is truly interested in the student’s making progress. We’ve found the experience with him so rewarding that our younger daughter started piano lessons with Andrew and improving fast (even though her first instrument is the cello).
Andrew's passion for the piano is contagious. His lessons strike the right balance between exercises (reading, counting, etc.) and learning pieces that I love, this gives me tangible progress each lesson and keeps me motivated to continue learning the piano. My piano lesson has quickly became the highlight of each week.
Lessons are tailored to my abilities, goals, and taste in music. His extensive knowledge and playing ability are made accessible by his exceptional patience when teaching. I highly recommend him as an instructor! My lessons are always fantastic and I learn a lot! I appreciate that he takes his time with me, is detailed in instructions and methodologies, and very generous with time and attention. Great instructor!
Andrew doesn't miss anything when teaching. I started a few months ago, not knowing how to read music or count properly and can now play pieces that were beyond what I expected. He's thorough in his instruction - counting, reading, strengthening your fingers, accuracy - but really encourages you to be musical (and not just technical). I truly can't believe how well I can read and how many songs I can play after just starting. Piano lessons with Andrew are the highlight of my weeks, and I would highly recommend him as a teacher.
At every moment, Andy shows an extraordinary passion for the piano and a sincere desire to share it. He greets students at every level and is flexible in setting goals. He took me on as a beginner despite his exceptional talents and extensive academic training. By the end of a year I was playing a piece that I had always dreamed of playing.
He was able to coach me into effectively playing pieces well beyond what I thought I could manage. He is patient and resourceful and has an immense knowledge of the piano and its literature. I enjoy my lessons. He is also a very talented pianist and I enjoy hearing him play and demonstrate. I highly recommend him.
Exceptional knowledge and background both musically and in teaching technique. Reasonably priced, especially considering that lessons last longer than the standard one hour session. Very interested in the student's progress. Also very flexible about scheduling. Nice person as well!
