About Marilynhowington
First, I would say that I absolutely love to teach piano to children of all ages (including the kid in each of us). Because of that love, I am patient with my students while doing my best to challenge and encourage them to develop their musical skills.
I teach music theory and technique as part of piano lessons. I want to ensure my students are well-equipped to progress and excel in their piano-playing efforts.
I teach in-person lessons from my home studio in Battlefield, MO, about three miles south of US Hwy 60 and a few blocks west of State Hwy FF. I also offer online lessons and have been teaching online since 2014.
Because playing the piano is a skill acquired over time, I enjoy the one-to-one rapport that develops with my students. I enjoy watching the growth in my student's musical abilities that comes with practice and commitment.
When I was a young mom with small children I decided I wanted to find a way to contribute to the household income from home. I read a book called "Do What You Love and the Money Will Follow."
Since I have been playing piano from the age of 5, I have found great enjoyment and often solace in playing the piano and singing. I also have had a lot of opportunities to use my piano playing to serve God. As a teen, I was the pianist for our small-town Iowa church. As an adult, I have had the privilege of playing keyboards with some excellent church worship bands. I was blessed to be the Worship Leader in our church in Lakewood, Colorado before we relocated to Missouri.
All that to say, teaching piano has been a natural choice for me and I have thoroughly enjoyed my relationships with my students over the past 25 years. I look forward to adding you to my group of "piano friends."
I studied piano with several teachers from the time I was 5 years old through college. I have a Bachelor's degree with a music minor. Most importantly I have 25+ years of experience in teaching piano to students of all ages.

Typically the new customer will contact me via email or telephone. We have a nice conversation about the student's goals for piano lessons. I also take that time to explain how my studio works. We choose a lesson time from my available time slots. I email a link for the student to purchase the required method books to get started. I will also email an invoice for the first month's lessons. Once the student has the needed books and has paid for the first month's lessons we can get started on their musical journey.
I have worked with children from kindergarten age through high school. I have also taught many adult students, from young adults to retirees.
Look for a piano teacher who loves to teach. Your teacher does not need to be a concert pianist or even have advanced degrees as long as he/she is a competent musician and has a track record of turning out students who can and love to play. Ask for references from satisfied students and call them!
I have a few I could highlight.
--A teen student who has mastered classical pieces on his own that I would have considered beyond his level. He is developing a passion for music that I never saw coming when he started out around five years ago.
-- An adult student who studied with me, first in-person and then via Skype for 4 1/2 years. Recently she decided she felt confident enough to "fly on her own" learning new music for her own enjoyment.
--A teen student who studied with me from Kindergarten through 11th grade. She became a proficient performer and used her talents at her church and for community events.
--An elementary student who successfully made the transition from in-person lessons to Skype lessons. She recently received an award for music and art proficiency from her local public school.

For an adult student seeking to learn piano, taking lessons from Marilyn was just what I needed, when I needed it. Playing a musical instrument was something I should have done when I was younger, but life happened, and I never made it happen. After years of lessons on various instruments, it was time to focus on the instrument that I believe can be the start for any musical journey. Piano.
I needed someone who was patient, listens to my goals, is flexible with lesson schedules, and makes sure material is learned before moving on. Marilyn does that, while enjoying what she does. This is a hard combination to find, and I feel lucky to have found her.My daughter, Meredith, has been taking lessons from Mrs. Howington for 4 years now. ( 1 in-person, 3 online ) She started at age 8 and it's amazing how far she has come along. Mrs. Howington is patient, kind, and extremely knowledgeable. We're so blessed to have her in our lives!
As an older adult who decided to begin piano lessons, I have been grateful for Marilyn’s skills as a teacher and knowledge of the adult learner. Her choice of the Alfred All-One adult lesson books has helped me learn theory as I work on concepts and the fundamentals of music.
Marilyn is creative and encouraging in her teaching. She does and excellent job of instruction and by the end of my lesson, I understand the piece I am to practice, and she has made it clear that if I have any questions, I can contact her.
Marilyn is also skilled in teaching over Skype, a concept that was new to me when I started. I have found that having my lessons at home and using my own piano have helped me feel comfortable and hasn’t hindered my progress in any way.
I would highly recommend Marilyn to any new student looking for a teacher.Very flexible when lessons need to be rescheduled and a very good teacher
