About Randi

I have never stopped studying music after all these years, so I also consider myself a student. I enjoy teaching music because I take an interest in the student's music as well as the her/his progress and success.

Since receiving my bachelor's degree in music from Radford University 20 years ago, I have been teaching privately, group lessons, accompanying for soloists and choirs, arranging, and composing. I have experience teaching elementary music, choir, college level private instruction, theory, and accompanying.

In addition to studying music, I also have a Masters Degree in Education which helps me design lessons that suit each student individually and pace instruction according to the student's needs.

I enjoy hearing each student's music develop and mature over time. It is certainly a form of self expression so each person brings something new to each lesson.

I have been teaching for 20 years. I started as an undergraduate music student.

I have a M. Ed and a Bachelors Degree in Music.

About the lesson

I can typically assess a student's level of ability through the first lesson. I will ask to hear the student play anything she/he has previously learned, their scales or technical routine, and we will chat about what their goals are.

If the student has no previous experience, I spend the first lesson getting acquainted with the student. We may start learning basics about the keyboard and reading music to get the ball rolling.

I have had students who are learning to play as hobbiest and students who want to compete. My students range in age from 4. Years of age to adults and they are from every walk of life.

Most at of my students are typical learners but I also have experience working with individuals with special needs. I think we are all capable of being musicians.

You should feel comfortable while you are learning. Listen to your instincts.

Music is a broad field of study but a good teacher should be able to organize concise, easy to understand lessons to get you (as a beginner) to a level of proficiency quickly.

I teach music for a small private college. One of the courses that I teach explores the therapeutic application of music and the various ways music is used in worship. Every semester is an interesting journey with my class as we journal and discuss how music affects us.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask if the teacher has any examples of themselves and their students' work that you could see/hear.
