I assess the student's level and ability first to assign the right materials for the student. Also, I make sure to encourage the parents to participate and support the student with her/his lessons and assignments. It is important for a student to love the music and not think of it as a chore, so I always try to make the lessons fun and engaging. I start my new students with Theory, Technique, Lesson Pieces, Fun songs and occasional composition classes and sight reading sessions.
All ages and all levels.
I also taught some special needs kids
It is hard to find a teacher who is well qualified and also compatible with the student. Always give at least 3 months to make a decision whether to stay with the new teacher or not. Always make sure that the teacher is covering all the basics of music such as technique and theory as well as the method books and recital/performance materials.
Last major event was MTAC (Music Teachers Association of California) CM (Certificate of Merit) testing. My students all passed with high scores on both performance and theory.
I also enter my students in MTNA auditions and NFMC jr. Music festival annually as well as doing 2 recitals a year.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. How long had the teacher been teaching and playing
2. Can a teacher provide list of references (former students)
3. What method and repertoire is used
4. If there are recitals and other programs for the students to participate in
5. How much are the fees and where the lessons are going to be held
6. Time and availability

She has been a great piano teacher for my son from the beginning of his piano studies. He has improved in all areas from technic, musicality, and theory. Highly recommended for all levels of piano playing.
If you are looking for a professional and passionate teacher, Mrs. Atwell is the perfect teacher. She is an expert at teaching not only the performance but also theory. She is the best piano teacher that I've ever met.
If you’re looking for a professional, highly skilled, extremely qualified and talented piano teacher, look no further. Jiyeon has been a personal friend of mine for 35 years and I can honestly attest to her warm, caring and patient demeanor as well as her amazing musical talent… she can make Chopsticks sound like Mozart. :)
I had the pleasure of having Jiyeon as a teacher for my oldest son since he was almost 4 years old, for 10 years. She is patient, kind, and very professional. She is a great teacher!
Ms Jiyeon is a knowledgeable, energetic and fun teacher who imparts good techniques and at the same time instills a lifelong appreciation of music (piano). As a colleague, she is extremely professional and she is always eager to help during any of our branch Festivals, Recitals and annual State Tests (Certificate of Merit). She is very dedicated at what she does, I highly recommend her.
Best Piano teacher!! My daughters found a new liking for piano after taking lessons from Ms. Jiyeon. She is the best!
I've taken lessons from Ms. Jiyeon for over nine years, and have learned almost everything I know about music from her. I am extremely grateful that she's taught me so much about piano and given me the skills to enjoy playing my own music and to pursue my musical interests for the rest of my life. As a teacher Ms. Jiyeon was always extremely patient, knowledgeable, and funny. She never hesitated to go above and beyond, often teaching me past the hour even though she wasn't getting paid for it. She's one of the people I respect the most and an extremely knowledgeable mentor that should be considered by anyone who wants to learn piano.
If you want your kids (or yourself) to learn piano from one of the best teachers in the world, then you've found her. "Ms. Ji" to the kids, Jiyeon is a highly qualified piano teacher. When she was teaching here in Los Angeles, her students consistently placed in the top ranks of their piano levels, winning awards at competitions, and performing in recitals and festivals across Southern California. Jiyeon tailors her lesson plans to what each student needs… no "one-size-fits-all" philosophy! She knows how to balance firm guidance with fun & enjoyable lessons, to help her students strive to be the best they can be. We miss her teaching our kids here in L.A.! Oh well… our loss is your gain! You will be very happy with Jiyeon as your piano teacher.
Jiyeon was my younger son's piano teacher for 3 years. Prior to her, we tried three different piano teachers because of my son's tendency to get distracted and other issues. When you look for a good music teacher, you consider a professional skills as well as a good communications skills. Jiyeon was absolutely well qualified musician and also was capable of attracting my son's attention and increased his interest in music. It was a big surprise when she announced her departure to Georgia since my son was so attached to her. She had done many things for us on the festivals, recitals and CMs. She always planned ahead and prepared them well. Thank you again, Jiyeon, for your endless love for my son and kindness shown to me last three years. We still miss you A LOT^^ From Golden State~~
For many years I've known and admired Jiyeon's work as teacher and pianist (in a world premier performance!). She is always prepared, and in tune with her pupil's needs and potential. She possesses a rock solid keyboard technique and knows how to communicate this to her students. I would heartily recommend Jiyeon to anyone....you will be in good hands.
George A. adjunct Professor of Organ, Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida
Jiyeon taught my daughter and two nieces piano and as a piano teacher myself, I can enthusiastically recommend her. She was thorough, creative, and offered sound solutions to technical or musical problems. Punctual, pleasant, and easy to work with. We love her dearly!
Ms. Jiyeon has been my amazing piano teacher for the past 4 years, and she's honestly the best music teacher I've ever had. She's fun, patient, kind, and extremely knowledgeable about everything piano related. Thanks to her, I passed CM level 7 with high marks and learned to enjoy making music with the piano. Any one would be lucky to have her as their piano teacher, and all of her students would agree with me that she is a wonderful person and instructor.
I have known Jiyeon since elementary school. We grew up together as friends and musicians! Aside from being an accomplished performer and sensitive accompanist, she is kind, dependable and dedicated to her work. Her students will find themselves challenged and motivated by the same high standards she holds for herself as a person and a musician.
