About Bruce

Instruction for students ages 4-18, beginning through advanced. Students learn by ear at first. This allows them to develop a natural technique and appreciation for sound before learning to read music, which is then carefully taught. Students perform regularly in group classes and formal recitals. Recitals, followed by a reception, are free and open to the public. Bruce Boiney is a graduate of Shinichi Suzuki's Talent Education Institute in Matsumoto, Japan, with 30 years teaching experience.

I enjoy helping students develop the ability to play with ease and musicality. Because a parent comes to lessons and helps the child practice at home in the beginning years, I get to know to know the whole family. It is not unusual for students to grow up in the studio, developing friendships with other students over the years, as we all work hard to gain the skills necessary for musicianship. I can remember well the victories students have, overcoming obstacles both musical and personal, and creating memorable performances along the way.

My first teaching job out of college, I inherited students who came to lessons each week, but could not really play anything very well. It became apparent that they had been taking lessons, but were not really developing much ability. After a few months, I met a teacher who was having a night and day different experience. Students were involved in a mult-faceted program that challenged students to work hard, gave them the tools they needed, and provided lots of chances to use their music by performing together. I was hooked and knew that was the kind of environment I wanted to devote a career to creating. I began studying how to teach with her and later followed her example by studying in Japan at the Suzuki Talent Education Institute.

I developed a love a music largely because my mother played recordings of great classical music when I was growing up. I can recall longing to play beautifully like the pianists I heard on the records. I went on to study music in college and received a degree in music education, including a concentration in the area of piano teaching. After graduating, I decided to specialize in Suzuki Method because it's core principle that environment nurtures musicality resonated with my own experience and because I was impressed by the results that I saw in the students of Suzuki teachers. To get the best possible training, I moved to Japan and studied for two years at the school where the method was developed. After completing that course, I returned to Louisville in 1994 and have been teaching here since that time. Because education is ongoing, I meet with other Suzuki Piano teachers each month to play for each other and watch videos of lessons together. Whenever possible, I attend workshops with teachers from Japan and have students participate as well.

About the lesson

The ideal time period for starting lessons is 4-7 years old. Before beginning study, parents and child observe a lesson and/or recital to get an idea of what lessons are like. In order to enroll, the family must have an acoustic piano (not a keyboard) in the home and an adjustable seat and footrest for younger students. The parent plays a recording each day of the pieces the child will play, which helps them learn the pieces and a feeling for the language of music. Students usually begin in a group of two to four children. Each child has an individual lesson and they observe the others. As lessons become longer, they are scheduled for individual times.

I have worked with all ages of students, from age three through retirement. I have worked with many students who would be labled as gifted because things come easily to them, but many who have to work hard for everything they accomplish. Honestly, they are both equally rewarding to teach. As long as a student is willing to work and the parent can provide a good musical environment, anything is possible, it is just a matter of how long things take. Often students who have to work harder appreciate music more.

It is important to observe lessons and, if possible, recitals to get an idea of how the students play and what the style of the teaching is. Are recitals enjoyable experiences that will help motivate students to try their hardest? Are lessons on a good instrument that are capable of developing music expression? Are lessons serious, but also respectful and supportive?

The studio recently hosted a workshop with two teachers and eight students from Matsumoto, Japan. Teachers attended from around the United States. Many students in the studio had lessons and a few families hosted Japanese students in their homes for a week, creating international friendships. There a was a big recital in Comstock Hall at the University of Louisville School of Music. In March 2019, the studio will have on of my favorite events, our bi-yearly duet recital. Students show their personality by picking lots of different styles of music.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The most important thing to consider is assess your level of committment to music study. That does not mean that your life has to revolve around music or that there is not room for other activities, but in order to be successful, students need to practice every day and participate in studio activities. In Suzuki Method, because students start young and practice with a parent for the first few years, the first step is a commitment by the parent to make time each day and avoid enrolling the children in too many activities. It also means playing the recording of the piano pieces each day and providing a piano that is in good condition and has regular tunings. If these things are in place and you would like your child to play classical music, this studio is a good match for you and I will help you and your child be successful!

Lessons for beginning students are $1500 per calendar year. Families may pay in ten monthly installments of $150 or discounted semi-annual payments of $725. This covers 40 weekly lessons, group lessons at the studio held several times throughout the year, and three formal recitals. There are no other fees, so it also covers things like practice books, high quality video recordings of recitals, piano trophies and other awards, etc. Lessons are from mid-August through mid-July, but students may enroll at any time for a pro-rated amount. Families are encouraged to complete the full year, but if needs arise and a student needs to discontinue mid-year, there is no binding commitment.
