About Emily

Hi! I'm Emily and I would love to work with you!

I have been tutoring since the summer of 2020 and I love it! I found that working with kids is my passion and that is why I have decided to pursue a degree in Elementary Education.

I love tutoring because I love helping kids of all ages (see below). I love coming up with fun, engaging activities to accompany a subject. I love finding out how a student is smart and using their strengths to reinforce a topic.

I just love working with kids! :)

I have worked with a variety of age groups. One of my first experiences working with kids was creating creating craft projects for 3-5 years olds attending a church program.

In addition, I have worked with students in grades K-3 and also 5th-6th grade.

The thing I like the most about tutoring is experiencing those mind-blowing moments when I teach a student a tip, trick, or shortcut that makes a math problem so much easier, and I hear them say something like, "Wow! It's like magic!"

Tutoring is so satisfying because oftentimes, I learn right alongside the student! There have been several times where I have noticed a certain pattern while teaching a specific math concept, and I get just as excited as the student (sometimes even more so!). I think it is important to show kids that teens and adults are still learning new things every day, just like them, and it is exciting to learn something new!

I began teaching when I was 12, when my friend and I created and led craft time for a preschoolers' church program. I got my first official tutoring job when I was 16, and ever since I have loved working with kids!

My dad is also a teacher, and I have always enjoyed going to work with him every once in a while and helping create lesson plans, teach a small lesson, or even grade papers!

I began teaching music to my next door neighbor right after her family moved in. Since then, I have begun teaching recorder for a homeschool enrichment program, as well as private piano lessons.

For math, I have taken several college classes on how to teach math to a variety of students.

For piano, I took a teacher's course through Piano By Number.

My typical process for working with a new student usually includes asking them a few questions (favorite color, animal, sport, etc.) so I know what would make a certain subject more relatable. The first couple classes I start with an icebreaker, which helps ease the tension that can sometimes come with doing something new.

As far as the lessons goes, I like to have a wide variety of activities (specifically for math, I like to do fast facts, worksheets, mental math, etc.). After the first few lessons, I like to give the student the choice of what they would like to do at a specific time ("Would you like to do a worksheet now or save it until the end of the lesson?").

For piano lessons, I use a curriculum called Piano By Number. It is how both my siblings and I used to learn, and now we are all teaching! For the first few lessons with new students, I help them set up the numbers on their piano, point out basic notes, and help them play a simple song, as well as play some games. Every lesson is different, and every lesson is a blast!

I have worked with 3-5 year olds, K-3 students, and a 5th grader who was transitioning to middle school. I have worked with audio, visual, and kinesthetic learners, and it is always fun to figure out a specific activity that would help them learn best!
