About Dan
I'm not a certified teacher, but I'm a hands-on science geek. I have background, either through classes or life experience, in a broad array of physical and biological science topics. I can use that knowledge to bring real world examples into my tutoring. When a student is having trouble understanding a concept, I look for a new way to relate the topic to something they already know.
My background includes two Bachelor's of Science degrees. The first is in Agricultrual Engineering Technology from Cornell. The second is in Environmental Science from University of Washington, Tacoma. I was a surface line officer in the US Navy. I've been a private pilot, master gardener, done a bit of amateur astronomy, and built a few small boats. For the last 12 years I've been a residential energy auditor. I've done some private tutoring, taught some recurring gardening classes, and I've been a long term substitute teaching high school physics.
I'm the sort of introvert who loves to talk. I really like it when a student says "Oh, I get it now."
I understand that everyone has a different learning style, and the reason someone might need a tutor is that however else they've been taught or tried to learn a topic, it hasn't clicked for them. Part of what I have to do is find their personal avenue to understanding and guide them down it.
