About Ted

Even early on in my own education, as far back as junior high school, my teachers saw that I grasped their learning material quite readily, and was invited to help tutor other students, who were struggling, finding that I was adept at putting it into terms & levels they could more easily understand. I've been blessed with a high IQ and thirst for knowledge, with a detail oriented passionate affinity for teaching.

I graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication from the University of Utah, where I excelled in many art classes (A+ grades), and helped tutor other classmates & students.
I created commercial art in advertising agencies, first as an artist then as their creative director covering all aspects of art direction, including illustrations, graphics, photography, video, animation, print, copywriting, presentations, radio & television, interactive, digital... and everything else CREATIVE. We took pride in innovating imaginatively new concepts, avoiding cliche & the mundane.
I also taught adult education classes at Skyline (SLC, UT), and have mentored & tutored many others in my leadership roles in most all my forms of employment over that last few decades.
I continue to freelance in the AV Tech event industry (corporate conferences, festivals & concerts, etc.) in video, audio, lighting & carpentry, leading & teaching our crews the various aspects of each craft. I thrive on DIVERSITY - variety being a spice for an interesting life!

About the lesson

I first LISTEN to assess what they hope to learn from the experience, then list & explain how we can accomplish those educational goals together with a syllabus plan & routine schedule of outlined steps & details towards achieving each concept.
Effective, diplomatic & caring COMMUNICATION is key in tutoring on an individual basis, depending on that student's unique learning needs: some necessitate a customized method and/or pace to better assure success for them.

A vast variety, ranging from middle aged adults, college level students, high school and adolescents to young elementary level children. Much like a chameleon, an effective teacher/tutor, when working individually, rather than in a class of several students, ought first LISTEN to the student, to better assess HOW to approach teaching them AT THEIR LEVEL OF EFFECTIVE COMPREHENSION. Everyone's unique in how they best learn - it's key to find out what that way is, in order to get through proactively forward. Even income levels (blue collar, middle class, upperclass) seem to vary in tutorial approach, so I customize accordingly to suit their individuality, for assured success.

Look for individualized care, that caters to your specific needs towards assuring success that you'll be able to also achieve at least to the degree that their impressive portfolio demonstrates they themselves achieve, and ability to communicate that effectively with you, especially in the medium & style you're interested in.

As a freelancer working in the event industry, the diversity is WHY I chose this profession, because each different event has its attraction, ALL of which have unique & memorable aspects. Sometimes it's the aural experience (music) or visual performances, or the beauty of the lighting & set we created for the clients. Just in the past 2 months I've had at least 10-12 such events I'm extremely "fond" of. Perhaps the most recent was a wedding in a beautiful environment of streams & gardens, decorated trees, gazebos, elaborate & lavish decor, lighted musician stage, trails & bridges, mountainous scenic background, beautiful people in stylish nightgowns, tuxedos & fashions, delectable cuisine... and that's not even counting yet the entertainers we provided: gorgeous models - 1 in a metallic dress that held numerous flutes of sparkly champaign, the other in a table dress populated with exotic hors d'oeuvres as they charismatically mingled amongst the clientele patrons offering celebratory appetizers & champaign. Fantastic vibes!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask to see their portfolio examples. Are they experienced in the styles that interest you the student? Do they seem able to converse with a repor that you feel comfortable learning from? Is their communication skills understandable and informative? Is the curriculum organized & clear in progressive steps with achievable (& affordable) goals listed and logistically scheduled?
