About Jim

My Facebook and LinkedIn profiles do not include teaching, nor the passion I have for everything related to photography.

Early in my career, I was a creative director in ad agencies and directed other creative people including going on photo shoots with designated photographers. I directed the shoots to get the images needed for ads and marketing pieces we were to design. I found I was spending a lot of time using my airbrush and paint brushes to get those images to show what I wanted to show. That stimulated me to purchase my own camera equipment and begin shooting along with the photographer on these shoots.

All this was film, before digital, so I then had to either have my film processed or do it myself. Necessity and curiosity led me to the darkroom and I learned that art through experimentation plus wheedling my way with other pros in the field. Asking questions then trying different things till my results began showing better images before or even without retouching.

Then along came digital. No one was much ahead of me because no one else got into editing images much earlier than I did.

I beta tested most of the photo editing applications before they were even on the market and was given permission to use those applications by the teams writing them so I could give them real time answers to how their applications worked.

I owned Canon film camera equipment and when going digital I bought Canon digital cameras which allowed me to use the previously owned Canon lenses. So I saved a lot of money. And, I could turn images around very fast with great results.

The only thing left for me was to learn newer lighting and shooting procedures from other photographers online and in person. I joined groups, went to seminars and shows begging for answers.

My work included producing and providing color separated films to my customers for printing their marketing materials, catalogs and text books.

To better provide those services and products, I took courses with KODAK at MIT in MA in the study of color and how to teach the new age of digital color. This study also added to my building knowledge of photography and post production of photography.

Bottom line, adding all I’ve learned about photography, editing and printing to what I already had experienced in the graphic arts and design has given me a pretty good leg up teaching those skills.

So, I began teaching basic photography to those that wanted to learn. I could not leave out post processing because it is so integral in getting desired results. That post processing includes Photoshop and Lightroom, both are Adobe applications.

I’m now in the Naples, FL area and am available to teach basic photography and post production techniques. I'm in need of a place to do this. A classroom, enven inside a warehouse where we can discus your shots and learn from each other.

We'll cover photo basics. Compostion, lighting - on camera and off. Color and black & white. Then we'll get into digital image storage and editing and critique.

People wanted to know what I know and started asking. I complied.

Working with film cameras. 4x5, 8x10, 20x24, 2 1/4x2 1/4 and 35mm. Starting as a photostat shooter in Chicago and learning to use a 35mm film camera on shoots with professional shooters. Going to MIT learning color and classes all over the country in seminars. Then teaching in my own studio and internationally. Even in Manilla. All this has added to my education.
