About Sara
I focus on giving students confidence in themselves by encouraging the adoption of a growth mindset (as opposed to a fixed mindset) according to which one's ability and inteligence is understood as having no predetermined limits, but rather may be developed indefinitely through continual practice and effort.
I enjoy helping students get closer to achieving their goals, whether it's passing a test or getting into a school of their choice. At my university's writing center I worked for one academic year helping students develop writing skills and work through class projects. I volunteered as a tutor for elementary students for one academic year with Reading Partners in Manhattan. In addition I currently hold a position as a graduate teaching fellow for Fordham University, and have taught six sections of the introductory course, Philosophy of Human Nature.
I took on a volunteer position as an undergraduate peer-mentor for other philosophy students' who were seeking help with their philosophy course work, and I found it very rewarding.
I volunteered tutoring elementary students for Reading Partners (1 academic year), worked as a graduate assistant at UW-Milwaukee facilitating discussion sections for introductory philosophy classes (1 academic year), tutored as a graduate assistant in my university's writing center (Fordham, 1 academic year), and I currently hold a position as a graduate teaching fellow (Fordham, 2.5 academic years) in which I've taught 6 sections of an introductory level philosophy course.

I first get an idea of what the students' goals are, and what their particular needs are by asking what skills they would like to improve, and which areas they feel they need to work on specially in order to achieve their goals.
When needed, I will offer explanations of certain things, but mainly I try to keep the student engaged by using the Socratic method, i.e., asking the student questions in order to encourage them to do the work of figuring out an answer, rather than telling them what to do.
I've worked mostly with college students (traditional and non-traditional), but also elementary students (approximately ages 5-8).
