About Tsaiyi
Expecting to earn my Ph.D. in Comparative Literature in Dec 2019, I have a deep appreciation in Chinese culture and an excellent command of English.
Each Chinese character is a phisophical concept. By learning the meaning of each Chinese character and the phrases derived from the character, language learning is no longer a mechnical drill, but a cognitive map of another of way of looking at the world and of expressing oneself.
I can explain the Chinese language--even everyday idioms--in the most nuanced and precise way possible.
I can show how a piece of popular song is a miniature of the unique poetic imaginary and rhetoric of Chinese culture.
I can show you the beauty and strength of Chinese language and culture, regardless of your level. Even if you have only one or two years of Chinese learning experience, we can read together classical and comtemporary poems, as well as ancient philosophy written in Classical Chinese.
Depending on your interests, we will together explore Chinese literature, art, philosophy, cusine, fashion, geography, history, popular culture, consumerism, as well as the current political situations in mainland Chinese.
I enjoy interacting with my students. I enjoy not only sharing what I know about Chinese language and culture, but even more so when you ask me questions and share with me your views about my native heritage!
As a graduate student at IU, I was assigned to teach a class for college students each semester. I've taught a total of 9 classes at IU. In each class, I design my own syllabus, give lectures, lead discussions, and grade assignments. Through a comparative structure of European/ Chinese literature and philosophy, I work with students on building a systematic method of critical thinking and, relatedly, of essay writing.
1. Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, Indiana University Bloomington (Dec. 2019).
2. As a lecturer, I have taught a total of 9 classes at Indiana University, on both European and Chinese literature and philosophy. By teaching general education classes, I learned how to explain materials to students who have no background knowledge.
3. I have been tutoring at the Chinese Flagship program at IU.
4. My field of expertise is on Chinese poetics and classical philosophy. My article on Chinese metaphor and on the Classic of Changes will be published in the journal of Philosophy East and West April 2020.

I work with my students based on their individual interests and requirements. So tell me in what way you'd like to work with me!
1. I can help with your course preparations (such as previewing your lessons) and assignments (such as essay writing).
2. We can have conversations in Chinese on certain topics.
3. I design lessons based on your interest--Chinese popular songs, movies, fashion, consumerism, history, Chinese philosophy, classical and contemporary Chinese poems--you name it!
I mainly work with college students of all levels.
Give it a try--for two classes--then ask yourself how do you feel during the class. Do you feel more energized working with your tutor than working by yourself? Are you interacting fluently--is he or she sensitive to your responses and receptivity? Is he or she helping you to understand Chinese in a way different, and hopefully more interesting, than your main classes? Can he or she explain concepts in a way that is systematic and easily accessible?
I always enjoy teaching. Of course when my own tutee won the first place for the Chinese speech contest in Chicago I was so proud of him. But as a teacher I believe the right mentality is to be impartial. I would not be more foud of a student because he or she is smarter or sweeter!
