I first discuss with the student what skill level they are at and what they want to achieve in oil painting. If they are a begginner we will start with fundamentals such as mixing colors, preparing their canvas, different paintbrushes and what each can do, using thinners and paint extenders, perspective, and paint maintence. I will teach short assignments to help the student learn these skills. Then once the student is comfortable with the fundamentals we will decide what their first painting project will be. I recommend a still life or a portrait for the first assignment. We will work on a quick sketch on the canvas and I will teach them how to make an undercoat and add layers to their painting. We will build up the painting and each lesson work on the painting until it is finished. I will teach them how to seal their painting when it is finished. Then we will work on the next idea they have.
Find someone who is patient and willing to work with your ideas.
