About John

I am a retired member of the James Madison University School of Music voice faculty. I was the tenor on the faculty for 44 years and also was the coordinator of the Voice Area for many of those years. My students have become successful singers in Opera, Musical Theatre, Concert singing, and Popular and Country music as well. I am an expert in the physical process of vocal tone production and am able to explain and build it with my students. Since I have retired, I have a teaching studio in my home instead of at JMU. I am also a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

I most enjoy working with singers, helping them to explore their vocal talents and developing their singing skills.

I was a singer and a music teacher in public schools, when I was first requested to give voice lessons. I found that I enjoyed the lessons, and that my students improved from my teaching, so I decided to pursue voice teaching as my main career path.

I have a bachelor's degree in music education, a M.M. in Vocal Performance, and a D.M.A. in Vocal Performance and Literature. I have 44 years of experience as a voice teacher at the university level. I am a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).

About the lesson

First, I talk to the student to gain information about experience in singing, and what type of singing and music he/she wishes to pursue. Then I listen to the student sing or vocalize, and suggest improvements. We discuss repertoire to study, and I suggest vocal approaches and exercises to develop strength and skill. This proceeds through lessons. One most important element is that I always try to discover the singer's personal goals, so that they can be directly sought.

I have worked with students as young as 12 years old, and as old as 70. Most of my students have been in the young adult range, from 18-25. Some previous students have intended to be professional singers, and some have been hobbyists, who just want to explore singing better for personal satisfaction.

One of my former students was a national finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Guild Competition.

Details

Present lesson fees are $30.00 for half hour lessons, and $50.00 for an hour lesson. I expected to be paid at the end of each lesson and I prefer cash, rather than checks.
