About Heather

Hi, my name is Heather, and I love math! I am currently a vet tech student, but I also have taken several math classes at Millersville University, including Calculus 1-3, discrete math, and logic.

I have encountered so many people who have a fear of math, and when I was in high school, I used to be one of those people. However, I found that with the right teacher, I could thrive as a math student. My goal is to be that kind of teacher: one who helps students gain an understanding of what they are learning and build confidence in themselves as problem-solvers!

Honestly, I have always been a very patient person and loved helping and teaching my younger sister from a young age.

I graduated high school with honors. I also have taken several math classes at Millersville University, including Calculus 1-3, discrete math, and logic.

About the lesson

First, I would like to meet with the new student and ask a few questions about them just to get to know them a bit. What are their interests? What do they like to do?

Then, I would ask them some questions about their relationship with math, as well as their learning style (visual, audio, etc.), study habits, specific learning disabilities, and so on. This will help me to gain an understanding of why the student has requested tutoring and how I can better help them.

Finally, I would want to see the student’s syllabus for the class they are taking, as well as ask about their goals in terms of math. Are they looking to improve their grade? Or just gain more confidence in the subject? From there, I would come up with a lesson plan that tailors to the student’s needs.

I have tutored my younger sister in algebra and calculus throughout high school and college. She has ADHD, so I’ve learned many techniques to help accommodate her needs. I have also helped many of my classmates in high school math classes.

Before beginning a tutoring session, meet with the tutor to see if you “click” with them. If you’re not comfortable around the prospective tutor, you probably won’t be able to learn well with them either. Also, a tutor should not only be passionate and enthusiastic about the subject in which you’re looking to receive help, but should also be encouraging, patient, and supportive when it comes to the needs of the student.

I had a coworker who was struggling with learning a specific topic in her calculus 2 class, so I gave her a sheet I had previously made for myself explaining the topic in layman’s terms. She told me later that the sheet was very helpful and told me I should go into teaching. It felt really good to receive a compliment like that!
