About Kate

I have a comprehensive science and math educational background, as well as, a people oriented work history which gives me the ablity to communicate effectively with struggling students.

Everyone learns in different ways, finding out how a student learns is the first step.

Then, we need to look at why a student is struggling, sometimes it's about confidence and not so much the subject. Positive teaching is effective and important.

I enjoy using the knowledge I've gained to assist others in their own success.

I've taught swimming lessons, trained employees for various roles in hospitality, managmement, electrical, and other fields; I enjoy watching someone gain confidence in a skill or subject so they can help others.

I started as a teenager teaching swimming lessons, then, helping my peers with science and math homework.

While in college and throughout my time in the workforce, I've learned many new skills and have trained people in all walks of life. Learning how to teach myself something with very little assistance showed me different approaches can make the difference between walking away, and success.

Bachelor's of Science in Biology, minor in Chemistry, with coursework in psychology.

About the lesson

First, it's important to assess current knowledge and develop goals for the tutoring. Understanding what methods work best for them to learn is also necessary.

Next, understanding how they feel about the subject, what they are struggling with specifically, and starting with what they know so we can build on that foundation.

Then, dealing with the road block that prompted a request for a tutor.

I have only recently begun tutoring, so most of my teaching has been on the job, at my electrical apprenticeship with 18-30 year olds , or with my 3 year old nephew.

In addition, I like to have a 15 minute meet and greet session before the first lesson, to make sure we can get a full hour of work time and not spend it on getting to know each other.
