About Diane

I have a bachelor's in mathematics from University of Oregon, and a masters in math from Oregon State University. I spent those six years making my way through college by tutoring and teaching mathematics. I am now a law student at Lewis and Clark, but still have a passion for mathematical research and teaching. I've taught first and second year college courses through Oregon State University, tutored high school and middle school students for the Gresham School District via the AVID program, and tutored privately online and in-person since 2015. I have experience teaching every kind of math up through second year college courses. I ask that students send me some of their materials to review before we begin working together so that I can see what they've been working on and begin the first session ready to jump in together.

I live for those moments when my students feel empowered because they have fully grasped and then mastered a mathematical concept or method for the first time.

During my undergrad, I was hired by Gresham school district to tutor high school and middle school students. I worked as a teaching assistant for almost three years, at two different colleges, leading my own classes, and holding office hours where I offered private tutoring to students. I have also tutored privately online and in person for several years.

I have a bachelors and a masters in mathematics, and am currently in law school. I have have 6 years of tutoring experience, and have taught first and second year college level mathematics courses as a GTA (graduate teaching assistant) for two years, with a focus on calculus, algebra, and trigonometry. I also tutored high school and middle school math for the Gresham School District through a program called AVID.

About the lesson

Prior to my first lesson with a student, I ask to be sent current and recent materials that the student is working with. This allows me to get a better grasp on the concepts that the student is grappling with, the approach they have already been exposed to, and to prepare for our lesson. It's my experience that each student needs a different approach, and so I have learned to be flexible and responsive in my teaching style.

I have worked with middle school, high school, and college students who are taking first or second year math courses.

Find a tutor that you can connect with. There are many different learning styles, and it is really important that you like your tutor, and that the way they teach is accessible to you.

Recently, the hardy orchids that I planted in my back yard last Fall came back after a very long winter in dormancy. They are in bloom as I write this.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
When a student is struggling with mathematical methods, it is often because there is a missing piece -- a foundational concept hasn't become clear yet. My suggestion would be: rather than struggling to "get it," take a step back and try and figure out what your questions are and when they come up -- or which pieces are missing for you -- because then, with help, you can fill them in.
