About Rochelle

I earned a perfect score (36) on the ACT and a top 10% SAT score, which motivated me to begin teaching both in 2010 for a standardized test prep company. I earned a full-ride scholarship to attend Spelman College in Atlanta, and while teaching in Atlanta I began to realize how little cultural competency is incorporated into the material. I took the MCAT, and scored in the top 10% on my first attempt, prompting me to attend medical school directly after graduating from college. I also began teaching the MCAT for the same company, but became increasingly frustrated with the lack of cultural competency in the curriculum, but further than that, with the company's choice to prioritize making money over providing content and structure that is beneficial for all students.

While in medical school, I also began to realize how poorly my patients understood science, and how much that basic lack of knowledge was preventing me from creating agency by which my patients could make their own medical decisions. Realizing my passion was for more to prevent disease and increase patients' qualities of life, I left medical school and founded The Black Roots. The focus of my tutoring approach is to incorporate trauma-informed teaching in a hands-on learning environment. I work individually and in small groups with students, and am developing a series of videos for high-yield content to reach students who may not be able to meet with me.

I enjoy working with students and watching them develop a love for the learning process. I am learning something new every day, so I also enjoy getting to participate in the learning process. I find students lose confidence in their science and math abilities as they internalize negative remarks from others, so I work to build my students' confidence in themselves as well.

I have a BS in Biology and a concentration in Math, so math and science are the topics with which I feel most comfortable.

I taught the SAT and ACT for The Princeton Review from 2011-2017, but grew frustrated with the lack of cultural competency in their curriculum, so I began private tutoring. I also taught the MCAT from 2013-2017. \

I also attended medical school and learned about trauma-informed approaches to teaching and how to reprogram neural circuits to allow you to perform according to your capabilities on exams.

About the lesson

I start with a consultation session in which I speak with both the student and the parent about their goals for working with me. I am aware students learn in different ways, so I initially try different methods to see which is most effective with that specific student. I then make sure to learn more about that students interests, and begin incorporating those interests into my explanations. I have found students engage best when they feel they can relate the material to things in which they are already interested.

Details

I do not have a standard charge for my students. While I recognize my qualifications and talent can dictate prices at the high-end, I do not think any student should be barred from learning from me just because of finances. Unless parents can prove they have financial difficulties or an extenuating circumstance, I charge $40/hr min. for elementary, $50/hr min. for Middle School, $60/hr min. for HS (more for AP), and $100/hr min. for Standardized Test Prep.
I do not have specifications for what is permissible as proof of financial hardship as of yet.
