About Joey

I am currently an undergraduate in my senior year at Cornell University. I major in Mathematics and throughout high school took higher level mathematics courses through the IB Diploma. Throughout high school and college I have been passionate about helping others learn and grow as students. My high school GPA was 4.0 and my college GPA thus far is 3.75, providing me with the knowledge and scholastic experience necessary to assist students with any high school math classes or math sections on the SAT/ACT. I have prided myself on my personability and skills in tailoring my teaching methods to any given student, and I will happily meet to discuss the coursework that the tutoring will cover, the times at which the student is able to meet, and any other particular needs of the student to ensure I can help them as much as I can!

Not so long ago, I went through the grueling process of SAT tutoring myself, and after coming out of my tutoring sessions I would feel unfulfilled. I realized that most tutors are older and have adjusted their knowledge for use strictly in professional settings, and because of this the tutoring frequently lacks the depth of theoretical knowledge required to fully aid a student in their ability to grasp the concepts at hand and the process of solving a test question. My advantage is in that I am currently a student who understand high school and collegiate mathematics from the inside, and I am fully confident in my ability to help any student reach the test score they want.

I first meet with the student to discuss the specific subjects that they are struggling with, and then to go over the past courses they have taken. I then will discuss with them generally what type of problems they frequently run into in order to figure out what type of learner they are (logic-heavy, memorization-heavy, visual learner, etc). After  learning about their methods as a student and their preferred ways of learning, I let them know of my approach to mathematics and to learning in general so as to establish a mutual understanding of who we are and how we learn. From that point, I delve into specific topics to introduce them to my teaching style, which involves demonstrations of how I think about particular math problems and go about solving them in a step-by-step manor. I will always ask the students questions and make sure they ask questions themselves whenever they do not fully grasp a concept or a step that I make in my process of solving mathematical problems. After demonstrating examples I then allow the students to tackle various problems as I guide them when necessary to the most effective approaches in the process of solving problems, and I will make sure they fully grasp the topic and feel comfortable before moving on.

Details

The first hour-long session is free, as it is intended to familiarize the student with myself and gain a full understanding of what subjects they need help with and the type of student they see themself as. After this initial meeting, I charge $25.00 an hour and will make sure my schedule is flexible to accommodate any meeting time that the student prefers.
