About Tessa

Hi, everyone! My name is Tessa, and I'm a freshman at UCF. During high school, math was by far my best subject. By my junior year in high school, I was taking AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics, both of which I earned a 5 on the exams for. My senior year, I took math classes at the University of Florida (my high school was nearby and I dual enrolled). On top of my achievement in the classroom, I also participated in Mu Alpha Theta, or the math team, at my school. I competed across Florida with my team all four years of high school was the president of the club my junior and senior year. As part of being an active and successful member of the team, I coached younger students in lower divisions my sophomore, junior, and senior year. This led me to begin tutoring privately my senior year, and I loved the job. Hearing when the students I helped scored high on tests and passes their EOCs was truly rewarding, so I hope I can help you/your student in the same way! I love math, so the best thing about tutoring is helping students who usually despise it begin to enjoy it more. It's incredibly rewarding to use my skill at math to help others succeed.

I was an active member of my high school's math team and helped coach younger students to make them prepared for competitions.

I have no formal training, but I have taken the courses and standardized tests I'll be tutoring within the past few years. I've also been helping to teach younger students new math topics since I was a sophomore in high school, and was a paid tutor my senior year, giving me valuable experience.

About the lesson

First, I like to develop a baseline of their knowledge by working through some basic problems on the topic. I prefer when students bring materials to work on, because that way we can target exactly what problems they are struggling with. I usually ask for students to come prepared with what we need to work on, so we can target the areas that need the most work in an efficient way.

I have worked with mainly high school students in Dual Enrolled, AP, honors, and regular-level math classes. However, I have tutored middle school students as well.

My last competition as a member of my high school's math team was the state-wide competition to determine the top schools in Florida. We had never placed in the top 10 before, and that was our ultimate goal. Sadly, we placed 11th by hardly any points. The memory of the competition is still a good one, however, because of how much my team came together and how hard we worked. Even if we didn't achieve our ultimate goal, we improved a lot from the previous year, which makes me so proud of every member of the team.

My sons, one in 8th grade and one in 10th last year worked with Tessa to improve their algebra and geometry grades. Both boys were amazed that Tessa knows EVERYTHING about math, and her approach to teaching them helped a lot. The 8th-grader passed his algebra end-of-course exam thanks to Tessa, and the 10th-grader earned an A in Geoetry -- he never thought that would happen. We appreciate Tessa's wisdom and calm demeanor, and we are thankful that she was so available and affordable. We highly recommend this smart and skilled girl !!
