About Sara

I consistent excelled throughout public school in all subjects, finishing in the Top Ten of 325 students at my high school. I have carried this same dedication and passion for learning into college, and it is a mindset I share with the students I tutor. My method of tutoring focused on positive reinforcement and helping students develop confidence to face challenges in their studies. I always encourage my students to focus on what they do know first, and then use tools and strategies they have acquired through previous exercises to work out what they don't. I believe the purpose of tutors is not just to help students with academic concepts, but to help the child develop personalized strategies for future success.

I enjoy watching the face of a student light up when they finally understand something! When I used to work an an after-school program, the highlight of my day was often working through a challenging problem with a student, seeing their confidence rise when they finally figured it out, and then watching them attack the next problem with greater success. I enjoy getting to know the students I work with-- not just what they just learned in math class, but how last week's soccer game went and how they built a pillow fort with their siblings.

Currently, I am a rising sophomore in college studying Behavioral Neuroscience. For two years, I worked at an after-school program for students K-5, where I assisted students with their homework and led engaging activities. I currently serve as an academic mentor to an elementary student in the city where I attend school. In the past, I have tutored both middle and high school students.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I first set aside time to get to know the student -- including their interests, hobbies, and favorite food (mine is fettucine alfredo). I take time to meet those who support the student, including parents and siblings. I then ask the student what their goals are for the tutoring session and create a list-- referring back to it over the session and subsequent sessions.
