About Kevin

Math is used literally every single day. I understand it's importance, and how it doesn't just have to do with adding and subtracting.

I used to run a tutoring business called Learn Sum, employing 8-10 team members and serving over 50 students in 3 years. Our pass rate? 49 students out of 50.

I personally am a finance major, so I've taken PLENTY of math courses ranging from basic algebra to advanced financial accounting!

Lastly, here's more of my professional experience on LinkedIn: (concealed information)

Generally, I'm a very altruistic person. I don't mean that arrogantly! I just know I like to help people and I think education is extremely important (even if you decide to go to the military or a trade school).

So, it literally started with me thinking out loud at 2am and I said, "I'm just going to start a tutoring business."

Previously I ran a business called Learn Sum that specialized in high school math tutoring. I started it, myself, in high school and ran it as a registered Arizona LLC for 3 years until I got too busy in college.

We served over 50  students, but to give you an idea of how well we did, 49 students passed of the 50 (but again, we served OVER 50 :)

I'm currently a Finance major at ASU graduating in May 2019 with my Bachelor's in Finance.

I'll start by simply asking them to work on any problem from one of their practice tests, homework questions, etc. It helps me see how long it takes for them to understand concepts, what their thinking process looks like, and where mistakes are made.

From there, it's really easy to determine a game plan so we can focus on the BIG problems, and slowly branch out to fix the small problems.

Learn Sum initially served any student. I was building the business so I took on any clients. However, we then moved to only high school students in Math courses because our team was built of high school students. So the lack of an age gap, personality gap, social gap, etc., contributed to our success.

Find a teacher that you connect with personally. Obviously you want a good teacher, someone who knows what they're doing, etc. Honestly, A LOT of people know what they're doing, so it's pointless to scroll through dozens of people looking for "the best."

What you really want is someone who can adapt to your needs. If you're a quicker learner, you need someone who isn't going to coddle you every single step of the way!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First of all, I'd like to mention that ANY question is good. Questions lead to more questions which lead to answers, and there's no good hiring a teacher if you don't feel comfortable with communication.

Other than that, ask about teaching methods, schedule, costs, and just random stuff about their life!

I do, and it's a flat rate. I'll never nickel and dime my clients, it just feels greedy. If it ever gets to the point where I need to stay an extra 30-60 minutes, that's when I'll start charging 0.5x the hourly rate, or another hour.
