About Paul

I ask my students what they need help on, and address those problems in a helpful and compassionate way. I excel in meeting students where they are.

I have been tutoring for a decade. At first, it was my peers to help them succeed because they were my friendsl; I did it because I wanted to help people. Over time, I have been told I have a talent for helping, and I now am making it my career. This is the best job I have ever had. Every day I get to help someone is a day I am proud of.

Every time we meet, I strive to further their understanding so that they can succeed and feel confident in their ability. I know they will do great, and for years I have shown my students how capable they are. Let's get to work!

I got started teaching by seeing my friends and classmates struggling with Math. I used my spare time in high school to tutor many of my classmates that needed help. Everyone I helped was incredibly receptive and always appreciated my help.

I got my BA in Mathematics

I was an Instructional Student Assistant all 4 years I went to my undergraduate Humboldt State University

I was a Teaching Assistant at UCSC for a year in the Mathematics department

I have been tutoring in Math for a decade ranging from 8th grade Math up to the Calculus series

About the lesson

I have discussions with my students during our sessions. I want to see what they know, and work from there. My typical session is having them do some preparation work before so they have questions, working on topics during the session, and then they go over it some more after. I strive to give my students the ability to work on topics we discuss on their own after we meet.

I have worked with students ranging from 8 years old up to ones in their 30's. I have helped students with disabilities reach their potential as well; I am accepting of all abilities. If you need help, I am there for you.

Look for someone that you feel comfortable with. You are going to have to ask lots of questions, and you need someone you know won't judge you.

A moment that stands out to me was when I was helping a student prepare for a final. They had been working on Areas of circles. There was a particular equation that they just could not remember, and it was making it hard to understand. We had already gone over it, but we hunkered down and went over it again. We did examples without knowing what the equation was: we were going to create the equation from scratch. After talking, they came up with the equation on their own and they were very proud to have gotten it. Sometimes it just takes time, and I have the patience to get my students there no matter what.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students need a jumping off point. Take some time to find out where the struggle is and what is needed. Once a student identifies one thing that is needed, a good instructor will go from there and the growth will blossom.

Details

My pricing system for my sessions is that I charge by the hour. If we meet for 30 minutes, I charge for half of what my hour rate was. I am not trying to break anyone's bank or make anyone feel shortchanged. I sometimes charge for prep time, but only on big topics that need lots of preparation; I always let the person paying well beforehand as well.
