About Lori
As a currently active teacher, I am familiar with the latest technology (especially in this age of Covid) and can use that technology to provide a strong instructional framework. I currently teach both in-person and online simulataneously at my school, so I am also aware of the challenges faced by online students. I do my best to make the tutoring sessions engaging, productive, and fun (as much as possible).
My favorite thing about teaching and tutoring is seeing that look in a student's eyes (I call it the "lightbulb moment") when they understand a concept for the first time. I enjoy helping students reach that point and I enjoy being a part of my students' success, especially when they have struggled in the past.
I have wanted to teach for most of my life (at least from my high school graduation), but when I expressed that interest to my mother, she discouraged it because of the pay. Instead, I completed my degree in English Literature while working as a legal assistant for a local lawyer. I thoroughly enjoyed working for him and ultimately went to law school because I believed I wanted to practice law. I graduated from law school and became licensed in three different states (Missouri, Tennessee, and Georgia) and practiced in each of them for some period of time, but I never quite found my passion in the law and I was deeply unhappy. I finally left the law and returned to my original passion by substituting for the school district I now work for, then getting the job as the Exceptional Education assistant, and finally got accepted to, and completed, a teacher residency program that allowed me to get my Master's Degree in teaching as well as to become a certified teacher. I have never been happier and thoroughly enjoy teaching my students, especially when I see that look in their eyes (the "light bulb" moment I like to call it) when they get the concept I'm teaching.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature with a Pre-law emphasis; a Juris Doctorate; and a Master's Degree in Teaching Middle School Math. I am currently employed by a local school district as a high school Algebra 1 teacher and completing my second year in that position. I previously was a teacher resident and spent a year teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math (all three grades every day, all year). Prior to that residency, I was an Ancillary Attendant in an Exceptional Edcuation setting, requiring me to attend all classes with the student I was assigned to and assist him as needed. I held this position for two years and completed both 7th and 8th grade with the student. In my last year at that school, before transitioning to the teacher residency, I was an assistant in a contained Exceptional Ed class and still attended some classes with my students, but additionally taught a small group of those students multiplication and also did vocabulary and spelling lessons with them.

I spend the first few minutes of the session getting to know the student, their interests, their personal (not their parent's) goals, and likes and dislikes (favorite subject, least favorite subject). Then I check to see what they are learning in a particular subject (whatever I am hired to tutor for) and ask about their understanding of the topic. If they have homework to do, I assist them in working through that and try to help them develop good habits such as showing their work in math. If we finish whatever assignments they have before the session is over, I provide supplemental practice or, if it is relevant, test prep questions. I try to make tutoring as personable and fun as possible for students.
I have worked with students with IEPs (Asperger's, severe ADHD, and other learning disabilities), middle school students in a "privileged" school as well as middle school students in a low socioeconomic school. I currently work in an extremely diverse school with the entire range of students, including many English Language Learners.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should consider their goals, and if they don't have any, they should set them. They need to understand why it is they are looking for a tutor and what they hope to achieve through tutoring. They also need to ask themselves how committed they are to doing the extra work tutoring can require. If they are in school full-time, they need to consider that tutoring is in addition to that time and to consider whether they are willing (and able) to make that commitment.

I do not have a standard pricing system at this time since I have been working as an independent contractor that sets the amount I get paid for me. I would prefer to get between $20 and $30 an hour, depending on the subject, but am flexible on that.
