About Elizabeth

I have been an educator for over 20 years, with a Bachelor's degree in science and a Master's degree in the Humanities. As a passionate learner with a broad educational background, I have fallen in love with tutoring, as a way to light a fire for learning in youth. I have a knack for finding and teaching to a student's unique learning style and challenges.

I've been an intuitive educator for most of my life. Early on, as a "know it all" big sister, babysitter, and early childhood classroom assistant in 6th grade. Naturally I became one of the 'go to' students peers went to for help in high school and college.

As an adult I've taught in the elementary school and highschool as a substitute, in developmental ed, and as an art teacher and GT specialist classes.

Currently I teach remedial math and english classes at our local community college, to prepare students for college level courses; as well as tutoring in all the subjects above.

MATH / SCIENCE: I have a Bachelor's degree in Research Biology with coursework through organic chemistry, Calculus2, and advanced biology. I can teach math from basic arithmitic through Algebra 2 / Trigonometry. I can assist with any level of biology through the sophomore year of college, including research, and can help with any science through the high school level.

ENGISH: I am an excellent writer who has been a magazine publisher and editor in recent years. I can teach writing skills from the 4th grade through college level.

HUMANITIES: I have a Master's of Fine Arts degree with advanced coursework in critical theory, art history, and studio art. I can help teach any introductory humanities class, including social studies and history.

CREATIVE / CRITICAL Thinking and Problem Solving: My education and years of practical experience and application have given me significant expertise in identifying and planning original insights and strategies to projects.

ART: I have a Master's of Fine Arts and can teach studio art, art appreciation, and art history; as well as guide students through studio practice, critique, and related professional development materials.

I have worked with students from elementary school through community college.

I think it's important to find a teacher that suits your learning style and personality! I frequently use analogies to help simplify abstract concepts, and real life examples to help students identify the relavence in what can seem like abstract concepts.

I think learning IS fun, and SHOULD be fun. And exciting! I approach teaching with this type of enthusiasm, and try to inspire my students, first of all, to use whatever subject they are studying to build their learning skills and thirst for knowledge.

My approach is process based, not outcome based, in terms of prioritizing completing an assignment or achieving a grade- though those are certainly important stepping stones to learning.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think back on which classroom or learning experience they loved most. Then... think about WHY it ws the best. Was it the teacher? The subject matter? The process?

Students should also think about their goals. The ability to be clear about what you want to get from your teacher / tutor will help both people work together best. If it's the completion of one assignment or project, that's good to know! If it's tackling one tough problem- let them know that's the goal! If it's trying to develop study habits and learning strategies that work best, so you can be the best student possible... it's good to be aware of that larger vision.
