About Jessie

I wanted to be a teacher since I was 9 years old, and that was the exact path I took all the way through college. I got my Bachelor's degree in Middle School Education and continued on to teach for 5 years. I gained so much confidence, knowledge, and experience along the way, and a huge part of me will always be a teacher!

I graduated from Elon University with a B.A. in Middle Grades Education, with a concentration in Math and Language Arts. I taught 6th and 7th grade math for 5 years, and I've been tutoring for the last 10 years. I've worked in large group and small group settings, and I've covered all concepts/material from the middle school math curriculum.

About the lesson

When working with new students, I first like to ask which areas of math they're struggling with and where they want to start. I'll have them work through problems on their own so I can see and navigate their thought process, and see if I can find any repeating patterns or mistakes in their thinking. I also like to ask them a few questions- would they like me to stop them immediately when I notice a mistake being made? Should I model my own thinking when introducing a new topic? Do they like/appreciate positive reinforcement? These things help me individualize my tutoring sessions so I know exactly how I should work with each student.

I have worked primarly with math students, ranging from 5th to 8th grade. Many of these students were very knowledgeable in math and just needed some help filling in the gaps; others needed a little more scaffolding and instruction when it came to more advanced concepts.
