About Dorothy

I teach SAT math and anything from basic arithmetic to college calculus.

My approach is focusing on teaching people to have a conceptual understanding of math instead of a solely procedural one. I believe this is the best way to learn. No time is wasted on memorizing steps catered to specific types of problems. If you can understand the concepts, they can be applied to any problem you try to solve.

I am a National Merit Scholar and have personal experience with the new SAT format. I can teach you all the concepts you need to know as well as shortcuts to help with time.

Personally, I found that testing strategies aren't as effective as they are promoted to be. If you know the math strategies just slow you down; and if you don't no combination of strategies will get you as far as someone who does.

Helping people to improve academically is important to me because I wouldn't have been able to afford college without scholarships. Working with children is especially important to me, as it allows me to provide a strong foundation of math that will continuously be built on.

About the lesson

The process always depends on the needs of the student but I usually either take a homework help approach to supplement their school's curriculum or create individualized lesson plans based on the subject currently being learned and the concepts the student is confused about.

I have tutored students from elementary school to college students. I have the most experience in SAT math tutoring and calculus, but can teach anything up to Calculus 3 (including statistics).

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about what part of the question they are stuck on in particular and which concepts specifically they are having difficulties grasping rather than a general 'I don't get it'. This helps teachers to know exactly how they can help you and saves time trying to explain the parts the student already understands.
