About Hiro

Uchicago Math Undergrad, UC Berkeley Statistics MA graduate.

I believe that the key to getting better at math is not by simply drilling the same techniques over and over, but to learn to look at problems in new ways. Students don't become better mathematicians by learning to solve one type of problem. They do it by learning to come up with new techniques on their own. That is the mindset that I teach.

I achieved great success in academic math at every level from middle school through graduate school through this approach. Math isn't a dry pursuit of technical perfection -- it's a creative discipline -- and that's where it becomes fun.

I have a diverse academic STEM background that has exposed me to a multitude of different approaches to coursework and teaching styles. When I teach students about math I can call back to the techniques I have best seen work in the classroom, either for myself or for others.

About the lesson

First I like to work through a basic assignment with a student. From there, depending on the student's thought process and problem solving skills, things can go in multiple directions. For some, simply working through problems where we can explore different paths of solving is an effectie way of learning. Other students appreciate taking a step back to see to underlying thinking behind a problem.

Find a tutor who does things differently than your teacher, but also understands the way your teacher does things. Not everyone teaches the same, so it's valuable to be exposed to a variety of methods.
