About Amyr

Strange as it may sound, my teaching began while I was working in high-level restaurants: there, my knowledge of wine and bartending led me to be an instructor of my fellow waiters. On another level, my ability to describe food and wine clearly and beautifully to my customers was, in itself, a form of teaching that made me a very popular waiter and earned me exceptionally high tips... At the same time, waiting taught me the importance of listening to those I was serving, of my obligation to attending to their desires and needs. When I began teaching as a graduate student, all the skills I had developed as a waiter translated into the development of my pedagogical skills and my understanding of the ethical obligations every instrutor bears for her students.

I have a BA summa cum laude in Medieval Studies from Cornell University and a PhD in American Literature and Poetics from SUNY Bufffalo.

About the lesson

I begin by listening: hearing my student's ideas, desires, struggles, and anxieties not only enables me to craft a creatively effective course of instruction suited to his or her specific needs—it also allows me to intuit shrouded strengths and skills, to draw them out in integrate them into our work together, furthering the student's intellectual power, self-knowledge, and self-confidence in ways that will serve all that he or she does long after our partnership ceases.

As a professor of literature, writing, creative writing, and critical theory, I have over twenty years of experience, most recently, for ten years at Georgetown University-Qatar, where the students voted me "Most Caring" and "Most Inspiring Professor," and my student evaluations averaged 4.87 on a 5-point scale. I also tutored some of my senior students and my sister in the GREs and helped a number of them with their graduate school and scholarship application essays. Since my return to the US a little over two years ago, I have worked as a tutor for students of all ages—from high school to adulthood—in the same subjects, as well as business writing, college application essays, and test preparation.

Do you think your teacher listens to you, attends to you in the singularity of your needs, struggles, ideas, and potential? Or does she seek to impose a preconceived rubric upon you that fails to attend to who you are and who you could become? Do you feel that you will be able to honestly talk to this teacher—or will you hold back your expression of your ideas, anxieties, and needs? Will you be able to ask the most necessary questions and, most importantly, challenge the teacher when you disagree, or will fear or anxiety hold you back? If you can answer "yes" to the first part of each of these questions, you have the right teacher; if, instead, your "yes" comes in response to the second alternative, you must pause, reflect—and look for another.

At the August online conference of the Emily Dickinson Society, "Dickinson and Distance," I gave a paper that interpreted on of Dickinson's poems on death, loss, and ethics in relation to our too, too pandemic times. The conversations with my friends and neighbors that aided the paper's writing, the writing itself, and the conversations at the conference that followed its presentation shivered me, sinew to bone: the combination of my academic work upon the poet most dear to me with an exploration of our commonly overwhelming times gave me a sense that highly speculative and complex as my work can often be, it may still speak to the worlds through which we all, with difficulty, move.

Details

I generally charge $60/hour for most of my tutoring services aside from test preparation, for which I charge $120/hour, and application essays, for which I charge $90/hour. My charges for the former include between-session email conversations about course-work, reading of any texts that the student may be assigned, and comments upon papers—and post-session revisions—that the student must write for his or her classes.
