First, I need to know what the student expects from me. It's important to be transparent on both sides in order to have a good working relationship.
Then I need to get an understanding of the material that they are learning at the moment. Next, I try to figure out what they know of the material. Finally, I want to know what they are struggling with and work out a plan of attack from there.
