About Margin

I'm young and enthusiastic about learning - not the type of drill-and-kill studying you are pressured to do for school, but rather the exciting activity of discovering a really cool concept and relating it to your peronal life and to the world around you. I want to get to know you as a unique human being and a beautiful friend. (concealed information)

When I tutor you, I partner with you in learning and respect you as a whole person. If you ever feel down or stressed or otherwise feel that studying maths can't be your priority at the moment, I welcome you to (when ready) be open to me about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Mathematicians aren't calculators - so I want to support you not just in academic learning, but also in personal growth.

Note: My name is pronounced like the margin of a page.

I am a rising sophomore at Haverford College studying maths and music. I studied AP Calculus BC and Multivariable Calculus in high school and took Linear Algebra and Differential Geometry in my first year of college. In 2018 I attended MathILy, a summer program in college-level discrete maths for mathematically talented high school students. In high school, I tutored younger students in mathematics as an NHS member, mentored a child with autism through Big Brothers Big Sisters, and volunteered as an assistant teacher for the 2nd grade at Newtown-Yardley Chinese School (in which role I also gave additional tutoring to a nine-year-old student who unlike most other students did not speak Mandarin at home). As a college student, my volunteering has shifted more towards activism (such as for climate justice) rather than hands-on help, but as an avid learner about learning and an educator/awakener in a deeper sense than mere instructing, I want to bring out the spark of curiosity and creativity in young people, especially those whom conventional schooling has made disinterested, apathetic, or unconfident about learning.

About the lesson

I first seek to get to know the student's relationship to maths: their current feelings about the subject, what their approaches to learning and problem-solving are, how their experiences in the classroom or other educational settings have been like. I also ask the student about their non-mathematical and non-academic interests and their typical day-to-day life so to bond with them and to help me think of ways to relate their mathematical learning to their reality and identity.
