About Samuel
Mathematics and science have the potential for incredibly deep understanding from students, but both of these subjects are most often taught with a philosophy of rote memorization. My goal is to help students not only understand that 1+1=2, but why 1+1=2, so that they can solve 2+2 on their own.
I am a college student majoring in marine science with a minor in mathematics at CSU Monterey Bay, and am a graduate of Bellarmine College Preperatory.
I have a great appreciation for math and science, and I want other students to see the beauty in them, too. I hate how many students rank math as their least favorite subject, in part because it is rarely the fault of the student. I love to see when students finally get a concept, no matter how challenging the process leading up to it may be.
My high school and college both required service hours, and for my first year of high school, I went back to my elementary/middle school (which was an 8 year school) to volunteer there, helping in classes, in the chess club, and in after-school care where I helped with homework. I enjoyed the experience a lot, so continued to satisfy my service hour time with assisting at schools.
I have experience as a teacher's assistant for both kindergarten and middle school, I have experience helping with homework though extended care programs for both elementary and middle school, and I have training in explaining scientific concepts via the Monterey Bay Aquarium volunteer program.

I first want to get to know the student a bit. Find out what classes they like best and least, a hobby, something like that. Then, I want to get to know the classes they need help with. This would best be done prior to the session, however. Then, I'd ask the student what they are having trouble with and, if applicable, go through a couple problems on the current subject with the student, to get to know how they approach the class and what problems they may be having.
I have worked with every level of education up to college, though most of my experience is with middle schoolers and high schoolers.
Find a teacher who isn't too mean and who is willing to explain why things work the way they do. So many of the students I have worked with in math have trouble because the teachers emphasize rote memorization over understanding, and a mean teacher will always worsen, and thus demotivate, a learning experience, no matter how technically sound their teaching abilities are otherwise.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How specific can you reasonably be about your needs? Is it an issue of "I can't do it" or "I can do it, but it takes more effort and/or time than it should" (both are valid concerns, but dealing with them take different approaches)?
