About JOHN
I have a solid background in statistics, economics, finance and mathematics through differential calculus. I am also very conversant with American and European history. I'm good at explaining difficult concepts from a number of angles and always love to see a mind "get it." You're never too young or too old to learn!
I was raised in Montgomery, AL and attended the Montgomery Academy where I was the class valedictorian. I obtained an honors degree in Comparative Military and Diplomatic History from Princeton University in 1988, and a Master's in International Economics from Johns Hopkins SAIS - School of Advanced International Studies - in 1996. I've lived overseas both in Europe and Asia while serving as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force where my background in European and military history was directly relevant. My civilian career has been centered in finance with several Fortune 500 companies (Siemens, Ernst & Young, General Electric). In these positions I have utilized my mathematical and economic training extensively in real-world business applications such as budgeting, forecasting, product development, and scenario analysis. I have often found that imparting such concepts to students becomes much more meaningful and effective when they can see actual applications. My experiences have led me to conclude that a broad education in various disciplines is the surest means to economic success and personal fulfillment.
Every child deserves the opportunities the world affords, but maximizing those opportunities requires basic skills and knowledge, whether it be mathematics or historical awareness. I bring to my tutoring sessions a host of practical applications for which mastery of the subject discipline is necessary in the real world; and, I hope, a true joy for learning for learning's sake.
