About Grant

I'm Grant Ricks, I'm 19 and currently studying at UTD for a Mechanical Engineering degree as well as a teaching certificate. I love to teach and I find so much enjoyment when my students finally figure out something difficult and feel a sense of pride in their knowledge. I've had experience teaching middle schoolers through my teaching program at UTD, I've also had experience teaching fellow highschoolers Japanese in the Japanese language and culture club I started at my high school. My approach to teaching, is to break down the concept the student doesn't understand, and try to find a way to teach it in a way that they do understand.

i've been studying Japanese with a private tutor for 4 1/2 years, so I started a Japanese language and culture club at my high school. In this club I thought fellow club members Japanese culture as well as the language and it was here I found my passion for teaching.

I'm currently taking teaching classes at UTD.

About the lesson

I get to know them and learn how they think and approach learning new information, so I can better help teach them what they're struggling with.

I've worked with middle schoolers through my teaching courses and I taught high schoolers in my club while I was still in high school.

For me personally whenever I look for someone to teach me math, I make sure the person is able to break down the concepts in an easy to understand way rather than just telling me how to solve a problem. I would like them to teach me how to understand the problem and why you solve it a certain way.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Really make sure to know what you need help on to the teacher and able to pinpoint the issue. For example, rather than just saying you don't understand derivatives in calculus, tell them that you don't understand how to find derivatives of specific functions.
