About Matthew
As someone who recently graduated from high school, I'm still familiar and comfortable with the local curriculums. I aim to create a warm and collaborative learning environment, guiding students through problems instead of relying on lecturing.
I've tutored for a total of four years, both through my high school's chapter of the National Math Honor Society and for my local homeless shelter, so I've assisted a wide variety of students. I tailor each lesson to the individual student, as there is no one-size-fits-all method to teaching.
All too often, students do not receive individualized help in class, forcing them to teach themselves. I love helping students as individuals, making sure they're not stuck learning material without any assistance. I also enjoy helping students achieve their potential; I believe that everyone can succeed given the right tools and support.
As a freshman in high school, I joined my school's chapter of the National Math Honor Society, and tutoring was the primary service opportunity. Throughout this program, I was able to help students in classes up to, and sometimes including, mine. I found that I enjoyed teaching, and my students' grades always improved, so I decided to keep tutoring throughout high school and my freshman year of college.
I'm a rising sophomore and chemistry major at Davidson College. I've taken Calculus II (MAT113) and Chemistry (CHE115) at the college level, and I have a 3.7 cumulative GPA.
I've been tutoring for the past four years, primarily through my high school's chapter of the National Math Honor Society.
I graduated from Kettle Run High school in 2021 with an Advanced Diploma and a 4.3 GPA, taking every STEM-related AP class offered. Due to this, I'm very well-versed in AP testing preparation and protocol. I am also willing to tutor for SAT and PSAT prep, as I got a 1500 on both when I took them in 2019

I usually start off by getting to know the student and asking them about how they like to learn. I also ask about their favorite and least favorite teachers so that I can gauge what does and doesn't work for their learning style.
I've primarily worked with high school students in math, tutoring up to AP Calculus. However, I regularly helped many of my classmates in other subjects such as AP Chemistry and AP Biology. At the middle and elementary school levels, I've primarily helped with math and science, assisting the students and providing enrichment for them.

I have not yet established a standard pricing system, as I always tutored as a volunteer in the past. I'm flexible with pricing depending on the financial situation of the students, and I would be happy to work with students' families to ensure that I can still work with their children.
