About Ethan

A very fexible teaching style that is adaptable to how students understand mathematics, from kinesthetic learning to abstract examples. Every student learns differently, so the most effective way of teaching also shifts with each student. I can accomodate all these students.

Passion behind the work. I am doing this almost solely for the love of mathematics and education; there is no more enthusiastic tutor out there than me.

Experience with all ages. I have worked at camps, tutor centers, and as a youth leader, but also in upper level mathematics groups on ongoing labs. I have experience in working with children and with adults inside and outside of math.

I absolutely adore the moment in which a concept clicks for a student. I love when I ask the inevitable question "Well, what do you think we should do to solve this?" when I think they have a good handle, and watching them figure out the concept all on their own. There is no more rewarding feeling than the knowledge that someone will be able to continue to succeed without you having to be next to them. And in that moment, seeing them realize how smart they are, and how smart they can be. The moment when math finally makes sense.

Freshman year of high school I had a math teacher that created a peer tutoring chat for our class, and people would ask questions and we would help each other figure out where they were struggling. I realized through this chat how much I loved (and how rewarding it was) to see someone finally click with a concept and truly understand it.

I started very small, mostly with my little sister and peer tutoring at school, and often students would be brought to tears over their schoolwork. No one had taken the time to help them, so they were convinced they were simply too stupid for math. But when we worked together, none of them were. From that moment, I vowed to become an educator and spend my time revealing how smart these students truly are.

I am working towards a Mathematics degree and Education certification at Vassar college, and I have worked with younger students and peers in tutoring centers.

About the lesson

First, I'll ask a little bit about themselves and their interests, so they feel more comfortable around me and so that in the future I can gear explanations towards topics they're already interested in.

Then, I like to figure out what general concepts they're currently learning in their classes and how comfortable they are in those concepts. I'll ask what they want the relationship to be: secondary teacher reviewing concepts or more geared towards homework help.

From there we can focus time and effort developing a strong basis of understanding on the topics and pursue the goal they have in mind.

I have worked with people with a very firm grasp on mathematics and in upper levels like Finite, Precalculus, Calculus AB, BC, Multivariable, etc.

On the flip side, I've worked with elementary and middle schoolers on Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Percentages, etc.

Be wary of teachers that only teach methods of finding the answer. Those are very important, but a lot of math is reduced to following set steps and so students can miss the underlying ideas from which the steps are built, making future clasases much harder to understand. Get someone that will help you understand concepts and math becomes 10 times easier.

Recently, the weather got warm enough that I felt I could have fun with my clothes rather than simply bundling up. Though not many got to see me in my outfit due to [current world event], it felt really nice to be able to dress up for myself and take on the world.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Where is the problem arising? Any one question will cover multiple topics, so being able to understand what parts you're understanding and what parts you aren't will make it much easier for a teacher to focus help on where you're confused.

What does each part of the question mean? This is the largest question that will help someone understand a problem that seems daunting. Nine times out of ten, simplifying what is being asked is all a student needs to understand the problem. If you can break down a problem to its essentials, you can usually solve it.

Is there another angle to approach this problem? It always feels better to solve something by yourself, so it's often worth the time to see if you can at least make one good guess before asking for help. If you get it right, then you've discovered a new way of thinking to help you solve future problems. If not, then nothing has been lost and you can still ask for help.
