About Andrew

I enjoy helping people understand the things they want to understand.

I enjoy helping people find out how smart they are and how much they already know. I also get to help them add to their knowledge and mastery of their world.

My first start wasn't glorious. It was sitting in the back of class making jokes and entertaining other students such that many of them ended up struggling to pass those classes. From that I did help a few understand the concepts from those classes such that they were able to right themselves and pull through with a passing grade and an understanding of the subject.

From there, I started formally tutoring and helping students understand what they want to understand.

For math, I work as a software engineer and have been an estimator for a contruction company.

I have a bachelors in psychology. I volunteered working with a youth group for seven years. I also had the privilege to teach skiing for a couple of years. And I tutored algebra, psychology, and biology.

I try to manage a few things at once. The two most important things are the student and the course goal. I go back and forth between the student through the material to the goal. I try to find out what the student does know and find ways to relate the course material in terms that will simplify and make sense of the course material to the student who then can understand and make use of the subject.

A variety, many with "learning disabilities" which I didn't really know about until halfway or more through tutoring them.  One student announced to me so proudly and excitedly that he got his hearing aids now and can now hear clearly the teacher in class. I was blown away, I had no idea he had been struggling with that while I was trying to help him. I'm glad to say we made progress before that, and that after that the progress and understanding came much quicker.

I am also proud to say many students have requested me for help with their next class.

If you want to learn something, find someone who knows it and who can explain it to you while you feel smarter and empowered to use that knowledge to do the things you want.

My dog is aging. He is now 14 and there are some days he looks so stiff that he may not make it out the door, let alone explore the neighborhood.

I remember when he was so excited that he would run pulling me behind him for miles at least once a day.

I try to cherish the time I still have to spend with him in my life.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what you want from the class or subject. It may be just to check a box to get to graduation, but there is so much more you can do with knowledge. Think about what you want, no matter what the class may be about, and communicate that to the teacher. Doing that will help the teacher know better how to help you.
