About Ryo

My name is Ryo Tsuda and I am a 4th-year undergraduate student at Northeastern University studying Bioengineering. I provide 1-on-1 online video conference calls to help middle/high schoolers with precalculus/algebra and prealgebra/algebra. I am a tutor with high availabilities, low rates, and is closer in age to the students, which allows me to relate to current curriculums.

I graduated from Haddonfield Memorial High School in 2017, where I peer tutored algebra and precalculus. In high school, I took AP BC Calculus where I receieved a 5 on the AP exam. At Northeastern University, I have taken Calculus 2, Calculus 3, and Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. I worked 2 full-time internships in the past three years: 6 months at The Wyss Institute at Harvard Medical School and 6 months at Cygnal Therapeutics.

As for leadership qualities, I served as the president of HMHS Class of 2017 for three years (sophomore, junior, senior). I also worked as a Northeastern University Orientation Leader that helped incoming first-year students transition into university life. Only 32 Orientation Leaders are hired out of hundreds of applications within the university.

In high school I worked with freshmen who were struggling with precalculus/calculus as a peer tutor and also with freshmen with their transition into high school as a freshmen orientation guide. As a swim instructor I worked with children between the ages of 4-6. As an assistant on the junior varisty girls tennis team, I worked with girls between the ages of 14-17. As an orientation leader I worked with students age 18 transitioning into college. From these experiences, it is safe to say I have worked with people from many different walks of life and it has helped me understand, empathize, and teach better.

I believe that as an undergraduate student, I am in a position that is perfect for tutoring middle school/high school students. Though I am not a licensed teacher, I have helped my peers with lots of skills ranging from school and sports. I helped out with the high school girls tennis junior varsity team my senior year. I worked at the local swim club as a swim instructor for 4-6 year olds. In high school I was also a freshman orientation guide and in college I was an orientation leader: both jobs I took because of my genuine passion in helping others.

About the lesson

First, introductions. Then, I believe learning more about the student's interests and passions will allow me to tie in some of the things that interest the student into the lesson. If the student can supply me with some information on what topics specifically they need help with, I can better prepare myself for tutoring.

I think that the problem solving process starts with understanding the question. Depending on the type of learner the student is (visual, etc.), this can greatly affect their overall understanding of the topic.

Then, instead of giving the answer to the student immediately, I believe it is best to have the student exhaust all of their options to help build their critical thinking thought processes. Tutors should guide, not give out answers. These good practices are beneficial for not only the student's academic career, but problem solving in life.

Since most students are visual learners, I will be using a camera, pen, and paper that the student will be able to follow in order to understand the problem solving process. The student can use this as a problem solving outline to aid in future homeworks.

I am proud of having finished my 6 month internship at Cygnal Therapeutics, a biotech startup company in Cambridge. Though I asked questions constantly to my managers, I believe the passion to learn and understand better is why I can help students better.

This advice is not that specific to how to look for a teacher, but I want students to understand that it is perfectly OK to not understand something. Not understanding is just the first step to almost everything, and asking for help is only natural.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think if students come to teachers with questions that are more like, "So I learned this the other day, so I've tried this, this, and this but none of them seem to work," it would help the teacher get a better understanding of what the student does and does not know. The more specific the questions, the better the teacher will be able to help.
