About Raven
I am a big advocate in helping students understand concepts to the degree they need to know, and more if they so wish. I want to be able to help students without them feeling intimitated by the concepts or the teaching style. I aim to learn about every student in order to help them in the best way possible, and most importantly help them gain the skills to become independent learners! A little bit about me is that I am about to enter my senior year at Texas Woman's University. I currently have worked as a college algebra tutor for over a year and a half at Texas Woman's University. I have achieved a 4.0 as a chemistry major, and am hard working and dedicated to improving education for all!
I started tutoring when I completed my college algebra course with a nearly perfect score (besides the one sign I messed up on a test!). My teacher was impressed and asked if I would like to work for the department. I want to say that while I am proud of my achievment in my own math class this isn't to make any student feel inadequete. I have been really lucky in my life in having good math teachers, and a mother who really loves STEM! Not everyone had that same foundation, and even if you did and you still don't get it that okay as well (There is a reason why I am going to be a math tutor and not an english one)
I am almost completed with my bachelor's degree in chemistry which gave me a strong foundation in math. I have also worked as a college algebra tutor at Texas Woman's University for over a year and a half.

First I would like to find what their goals are. Whether it be to delve deeper into a concept they are comfortable with or help them with a class they may be struggling with. After I would assess them based on their class (It would be great if the student could provide a syllabuss before the first meeting). After we would start working through the different concepts everyweek, the exact work would again depend on the students individual needs.
I have currently only worked with college algebra students in tutoring.
Find someone you like! I think something undervalued in the education system as a whole is the relationship between teacher and students (or tutor and student). If a student doesn't like the person they are being taught by it will make the concept much more difficult for them to learn.
I recently attended a (online) gathering with a group of advocates for getting indiginous students into STEM. I was amazed by how passionate and understanding everyone was at that meeting and will continue to work with them on future projects!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Know what you're asking! This can be a difficult thing to learn to do, but practice makes better. Before you go up to your teacher amd ask a question think about where you got stuck, did you not know what the question is asking for? Did you not know where they got a formula from? Walking through a question like this will help you narrow down the specific problem your having, and if you are having trouble with all of it that's okay too!
