About Katherine

I am a first-year college student currently majoring in Communications. I have always enjoyed breaking down larger, more complicated math problems into easier-to-solve steps. As someone who struggled with math when I was younger, I am able to share useful and applicable tips and ways that are actually helpful. I am to make math not only easier to understand, but also more enjoyable. I have several years of tutoring experience throughout middle school and high school and love working with others to figure out a math problem!

I enjoy making harder concepts easier to understand and creating lasting study tips and homework tips that will actually be useful. Math is a very useful skill to have no matter one's field of interest, and I think that with the right strategies, everyone can enjoy and become better at it!

I started tutoring in middle school through my schools National Junior Honor Society, but I had been tutoring my friends after school since elementary.

I have tutored in a third-grade classroom, middle-school peers and other elementary school students both in person and over zoom through clubs at school throughout my time in middle and high school. I am now a Communications major at the University of California, Davis, where I am still taking math classes to further my learning.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I would first evaluate the current topics they are studying in school and what their current homework and/or tests look like. From there, I assess their strengths and weaknesses, and create a balance of both when doing math practice. I look for ways to use the student's strengths to help them understand areas that they are weaker in. I like to use hands-on examples as I believe the best way to learn is by actually practicing and doing examples.

I have worked with grades K-12 throughout my time as a tutor.

I would advise students to find a teacher that understands their learning style and shares the same goals as them. Make sure that you are able to communicate your needs with your teachers, and likewise make sure that your teacher is receptive of these needs.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Some questions I would advise students to think through would include:

What am I hoping to get out of this tutoring session? Is there anything in particular that I don't have the hang of yet that I would like to practice?

What is my learning style? Do I like doing examples on my own then checking my work, going through examples with the tutor then trying one on my own, or watching the tutor demonstrate an example before trying one on my own?

How can I stay focused while learning new things? What is my motivation for learning?

Details

I charge $16 per hour of tutoring, and I can accomodate anywhere from 30 minute tutoring sessions to 3 hour sessions, all fully on Zoom (or preferred online video chat application).
