About Craig

I tutor math (primarily algebra through calculus BC), physics, and astronomy.

* Ph.D. in astrophysics (big bang cosmology, focus on dark matter) from the University of Chicago

Tutoring is usually at least a little bit beneficial because it involves additional time engaging with the subject matter and one-on-one attention. But the biggest benefits of tutoring--obtaining genuine understanding and even developing a life-changing comfort with academics--are rare because most tutors have a limited understanding of how people learn. Helpful hints and nudges when working one-on-one are nice, but they tend to give both you and your tutor a false sense of accomplishment, leading to confusion when your test performance barely improves.

You want a tutor who doesn't just point out how to do math problems but who understands student-centered learning and helps you develop understanding and, ultimately, the confidence to figure out how to approach and solve a problem--rather than just helping you amass a mental catalog of "what you're supposed to do with this kind of problem"--a catalog that's way too large for anyone to remember. For better or worse, math (and its application to science and business and computing and lots of other things) is a long-term part of our lives. You want to develop key skills and instincts now so that you don't suffer through years of ongoing struggle. I can help you do that.
