About Elaine

I'm a student at the University of Florida studying mathematics. I love math, but that wasn't always the case. I recognize that there can be many obstacles to learning math and I am dedicated to working with students to overcome these obstacles.

I worked as a tutor at Mathnasium for a year, tutoring students in everything from single-digit addition to trigonometry. During the past year, I tutored a student in Algebra 2 and Geometry who was having difficulty with the transition to online classes.

I believe that there are many different ways to explain and understand concepts in math. I work with students to help them understand the material they are working on and to develop the skills they need to reach their goals.

Math can be a challenging subject so I enjoy the opportunity to help students in this area.

In the past, I've worked one-on-one with students, as well as with up to four students at once. Whether we are working on calculus, SAT prep, or addition, I love seeing how students connect with the subject and what methods of learning work best for them.

My first experience teaching was helping my peers in our math classes. This started in geometry, where I loved helping the people around me understand how to write proofs and work with triangles. In AP Calculus BC, I wrote my own study guides before exams and helped friends understand each section through conceptual explanations and guided examples.

Starting in ninth grade, I've taken as many math classes as possible every semester. In high school, I got a 5 (out of 5) on my AP Calculus BC exam and scored a 790 (out of 800) on the math section of my SAT.

When I worked at Mathnasium, I trained to tutor 1-4 students at once. After that, working one-on-one with students was exciting for me because it allows for a more individualized approach.

About the lesson

First, we usually discuss their experiences in current and previous math courses. If there are specific topics that students know they want help with, I like to begin there. To get started, we may go through problems on their recent assignments to identify what they understand and where they need more support.

I enjoy taking an interactive and friendly approach to tutoring where students work towards independent mastery while gaining confidence in their abilities.

In math, I've tutored students anywhere from 5 to 18 years old. While tutoring English, my students were adults. I'm comfortable working with students of all ages!
