About Jon

The worst thing about teaching is seeing a student who feels defeated. The best thing about teaching is helping a student overcome that.

If something were easy, it wouldn't matter very much.

It is the difficult things in life that shape us and that we remember with pride when we overcome them.

Be an overcomer.

I love teaching math and science! These two areas cover almost everything about our wild and crazy universe. The best teaching moments are when students start to see and appreciate these topics also.

Math is all about patterns - if you learn to recognize the patterns, you can figure it out. It's like a murder mystery... a puzzle that you solve simply by using its own rules against it!

I actually started in the Army. As a sergeant it was my job to train soldiers. When I left the Army, I realized that teaching would make a great career as it worked with my personality and would give me the chance to make a difference in other people's lives.

I have three degrees: 1 Bachelor's and 2 Master's degrees in Education - Elementary Education, Middle School Science and Math, and Mid to High School Math. I have taught for 15 years from 5th through high school.

About the lesson

First, identify the need - what type of help are you looking for?

Second, identify the struggle - what seems to be the biggest obstacle to your learning?

Third, reassure you that together we can work through this. It may take time and hard work, but if you persevere, you will see success.

I have worked with all kinds of students from most types of backgrounds and learning difficulties. Overall, I have found that students who are willing to work hard will be successful regardless of their circumstances.

When looking for a good teacher or tutor, one of the first things I would look for is real-world experience. Does this person know how to teach?

Obviously, you also want someone who knows the content.

Finally, don't be afraid to try out different people. Find one who has a style that works for you. Not every teacher is meant for every student. But every student will have a teacher meant for them.

I am available for general tutoring help or homework help most evenings (6pm - 9pm PST, Mon - Fri) for $30/hr. I am also available on Weekends (1- 6pm PST) for $40/hr.
