About Brennan

I approach mathematics & physics, much the same as a beginner would with any subject. While I have numerous years of experience with Calculus, Geometry, and Algebra, I am above believing that I have mastered any subject. Setting a solid foundation for mathematical thinking is more important to me than memorizing the steps to approach certain subjects. I love to teach, not to show off expertise, but because I am able to take a step back and re-learn the tools useful for doing mathematics.

I am a math major, and am familiar with upper-level mathematics and problem-solving. That said, I often find myself relearning concepts from earlier math classes that I haven't utilized in ages. Life-long learning is more than just picking up new skills, its also about passing on knowledge with others. My mother taught me to learn by a "see one, do one, teach one" philosophy, which I continue to believe in.

Highschool tutoring.

I have been tutoring my friends and fellow students since my sophomore year of high school. I spent time volunteering at the Math Assistance Center after school, where I began learning what it meant to be a teacher. Independently, I have done work for family friends, and neighbors.

I like to believe that I had an upbringing with excellent teachers. My mother, who teaches high school chemistry, laid the groundwork for how I approach learning a subject("See one, do one, teach one"). My father, while not a formally trained teacher, taught me everything he knew about auto-mechanics, through rigorous practice, repetition, and discipline. I implement both of their philosophies into my day-to-day education.

About the lesson

Before doing any mathematics, I like to spend some time getting to know the student and what they are learning. I may ask a bit about how comfortable they are learning math on their own and what they believe would allow them to be successful. Everyone is different, and I would rather cater to my student's needs than impose what I believe works.

I generally like to teach from any resources a student may already have, as introducing new content could be jumbled and confusing.

Once I have reviewed a student's problem sets, resources, and/or notes, I like to move on to working through the mathematics itself. I may ask the student to work through a problem to the best of their ability, just to see what they already know. If there are no flaws, we move on, otherwise, I take the opportunity to teach.

While most of the session will involve the student doing mathematics, a portion of it will also be patching up concepts. If the student is confused about anything, I encourage them to take notes while I go back through any steps or areas they may have missed. I make digital copies of my notes so all our sessions are recorded.

Aside from learning and practice, I may have a student finalize their knowledge by "mock-teaching" me if they are comfortable.

Elementary, high-school & college.

Tutoring sessions will not be your only path to success. I encourage all my students to actively study, practice, and verbally re-teach themselves what they are learning. Do these three things, and I can guarantee positive results.
