About Tim

I have tutored or taught college level classes in biology, English, algebra, calculus, chemistry and statistics since 2004.

I have a BS in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and recieved an MS in Biology in 2011. I recently completed my PhD dissertation in Neuroscience at University of Maryland Baltimore.

I started tutoring in my chemistry and physics classes in college. Shortly thereafter I started working for the tutorial services program at my alma mater. I was in high demand there for my breadth and depth of knowledge as well as my ability to explain abstract and complex material in a variety of ways.

From 2003 until 2006 I tutored for the University of Cincinnati tutorial services department. From 2006 until 2008, while working on my MS in Biology, I worked as a teacher's assistant running lab sections in cell biology, genetics, freshman biology, and anatomy and physiology. From 2008 until 2017, I worked one-on-one with junior lab members designing experiments and analysis strategies in human psychophysics and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies.

About the lesson

I like to learn from the student at the first meeting how they approach the subject and whether they feel they need help in a specific area or general assistance. I see my job as a tutor to assess both how the student will best succeed in the class and best learn the essential parts of the material to allow them to move forward successfully in their educational pursuits. If the student has just worked through a test or exercise I like to know what were the most difficult points for the student.

I have generally worked with undergraduate college students. I have worked informally with high school age students, though I have less experience with this age group. I am open to working with high school and college students.

Ask the following questions:

Does this person have thorough understanding of the material? Is this a person I could stand listening to for an hour? Does this person sound boring? Is this person creative?

I recently discovered a new functional connection in the human brain related to pain processing.

What are my current challenges in this class? What areas of the material would I benefit from an alternative viewpoint?

Keeping in mind why you are there is important since time is frequently limited.

Details

I charge $40 an hour. I am willing to travel up to 25 miles to meet and work with a student.

Cancellations by text, phone message or email with at least 12 hours notice are not charged.

No call-no shows are charged 1/2 hour.
