About Michael
I work with private clients, small groups, and companies seeking risk mitigation of criminal violence and disasters. With a holistic approach to survival, I evaluate clients' physical security, cybersecurity, and preparedness in order to provide tailored education and training. This is not a bi-weekly group class to exercise or get a belt; I work with people in fear for their life, with the financial and time resources to dedicate a proportional response toward perceived threats. A training session could involve educating on digital privacy, gouging the eye of an attacker, or using a TASER inside a BART train.
I don't like seeing people taken advantage of. From verbal bullies, to those with authority abusing their power, to armed robbers, I find peace in knowing the depths of fear and regret that will overcome these aggressors finding they've messed with the wrong person, and the positive attitude adjustment that will engender. I don't condone vigilantism or unjustifiable, disporportionate responses, rather I strive to produce warriors who achieve peace through strength along with deterrance and suppression of criminally violent actors.
I have been training in reality based, non-sport martial arts since 1999, routinely teaching lower ranks. In college, I worked as a mentor for freshmen engineering students. I then worked as a part time river rafting guide for 7 seasons, training customers to paddle efficiently and follow commands through rapids that have claimed lives. Since January 2017, I have assistant instructed at least 50 defensive firearms courses for up to 35 students per class, and a couple dozen womens self defense seminars, with employment of the Socratic Method of teaching. I intentionally devote effort toward cultivating skill in teaching, not just honing my skills of destruction, such that I efficiently convey knowledge to my students.
I have black belts in Dux Ryu Ninjitsu, Urban Combat MMA, and a Level 1 teaching credential from the International Kapap Association. I'm a certified Civilian TASER Trainer and have most of the firearms teaching credentials available from the NRA and USCCA. I'm certified by FEMA to teach the CERT Basic course for disaster responders; I like to collect lots of certificates to bolster my fragile ego:) I'm currently training with a former sniper and body guard who holds black belts in 10 martial arts and has 88 combat kills. I have a bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from USC, with multiple utility patents for robotics, and will probably conquer the entire Bay Area with a robotic ninja army if I get bored enough!

Email or meesage me so we can verify you are seeking more than routine martial arts training, either seeking convenience and privacy of private instruction and/or an extreme response to threats upon your safety. An hour of my time can buy up to a month of typical dojo group lessons, so understand what I offer that is different and beyond commonly available group classes. A liability waiver must be digitally completed, found on the Legal page of my site; you will find it comprehesive, as I protect myself from all modes of attack: physical, psychological, legal, digital. I guide my students to similarly protect all of their attack surfaces. Initial sessions leverage Urban Combat's womens self defense seminar video curriculum- which applies to all genders- to address situational awareness, boundary setting, law of self defense, criminal psychology, and some very simple moves that work under adrenal stress. Another class might involve a full speed knife attack on a stairway, or how to hit an apex cornering your car to evade a stalker. If you are motivated by the idea of martial arts providing a trophy, belt, and ego boost, there are plenty of McDojos where you can train on a cushioned mat of a climate controlled, well lit dojo/gym; if seeking survival from criminal attack, train with me to fight at night, in the rain, on the beach, after 3 beers, against 3 attackers, etc.
An attorney hardening his home and office from disgruntled litigants, a weed farmer, a womens trauma treatment mental health facility, a female corrections officer, and the general public via regular womens self defense seminars and defensive firearms courses. I particularly like to work with women because their economic power is growing, they tend to be aware of their vulnerability to attack compared to men, and that vulnerability is increasing as changing gender roles reduce the reliability of a male partner or friend having both the traditional masculine values of protection as well as the training to effectively implement that moral role. A truly independent, modern woman must be her own protector and allocate resources toward fulfilling that role. As to men, I can help you become Joe Somebody through study of The Art of Self-Defense. I have not worked with children other than my nephew, ages 3-4, but I am developing competence in this demographic by training with a martial artist with extensive experience training elementary age children, being a published author on the subject of total/full-spectrum protection of children.
Setup routine meetings, at least weekly, to avoid failing to schedule and wasting time texting scheduling requests. Buy packs of 10 lessons/hours at a time to avoid the overhead of payment processing and get a discount. Find out what your instructor is good at, how they are unique compared to other options, and try to get them to focus on those skills. When selecting a trainer/coach to prepare you to fight for your life against a rapist or thug, ask yourself who the thug would rather fight: The clean cut, smiling guy wearing Japanese pajamas and holding a weapon that is incredibly uncommon in North America, or a guy who will go after them with a ski mask and hatchet while wearing his favorite Simpsons shirt? On that thought, instead of a black belt, my most skilled students will be awarded a ski mask and Simpsons shirt.
Being used as a teaching point for other advanced firearms instructors, as an example of a student with "a lot of training" to adjust their teaching method towards, on the range of a USCCA Level 2 Instructor Certification course late July 2019. I.e., a couple very advanced shooters explaining to other advanced shooters that I am particularly advanced- in some respects- compared to them.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Know your schedule for at least the next 90 days, and give suggestions on regular meeting times. Ask your trainer what their schedule is like; asking a night owl chronotype to do an 8am class would lead to a low quality experience. Ask what would happen to your family members or company if you were disabled or killed, who is depending on you, and prepare to allocate resources of time, effort, and finances proportional to the risk.

$150/hr., or $1,250 for 10 hours. $100-150/hr. is typical for private lessons in personal training, Yoga, tennis, etc. in the Bay Area. Small groups of up to 3 may split the cost. The distance I will drive from West Menlo Park, without a travel charge, depends on how many hours the meeting will be. A martial arts meeting is typically 90-120 minutes, but that could expand into another several hours probing your digital security and home security.
